Sigmund Johnnessen - Summit School

There's a few legends around the country and Sigmund Johannessen is one of them. The driving force behind Summit School of Guitar Building, many a student from around the globe have received the gifts from Sigmund. Don't let the understated profile fool you 🤓

I have spent the last 30 years passing on the trade that I love. Teaching older guys something they always wanted to do,or teaching a young person just ready to get into this wonderful world of guitar building has been a fantastic journey. Still have time to build guitars and enjoying life is a blessing.

✨️ Luthier Bio ✨️
Terry Meadows

Woodworker since childhood including furniture building, very familiar with the properties of wood and with woodworking tools. Retired physician building acoustic guitars since 2019 as a hobby utilizing acoustic measuring techniques of Trevor Gore and Giuliano Nicoletti. I focus on OM size steel string guitars which are falcate or radially braced, some with live backs, some with cutaways. Lately I am favouring elevated fretboards and I am currently working on redesigning headblock configurations to accommodate necks without a heel to improve upper fret access without requiring a cutaway.

I have done online Lutherie courses from Robert O’Brien, Tom Bills, and utilized You Tube videos created by many other well known luthiers including Bill Wilborn, Beau Hannam, and Ken Parker. I have attended workshops at the Vancouver Guitar Festival. Member of the Guild of American Luthiers for the last 5 years, whose materials I also utilize.

Ed Bond - Halcyon Guitars

Ed Bond is a luthier based in Nanaimo, British Columbia. He combines 25 years of guitar building experience with a well trained ear to create two lines of high quality acoustic guitars.

Halcyon Guitars feature elegant and minimalist construction, honouring the natural beauty of their raw materials, and focusing all efforts on tone and playability. Tinker Guitars elevate this philosophy by adding rare woods and intricate details that highlight Bond’s woodworking skills. Both product lines showcase the fundamental purpose of acoustic guitars by putting their sound quality front and centre.

Ed began building guitars at Larrivée Canada in 1996. Starting with the very basics he moved around the shop floor, becoming intimately familiar with the compartmentalized details of factory production. His last 12 years at Larrivée were spent as Production Manager and Quality Control Manager as well as directly supervising the assembly line. He has been involved, hands on, for the production of 100,000 instruments, a truly invaluable experience. Ed has personally completed 5000 final neck fits, 10,000 fret jobs and 40,000 setups including the final 10 guitars to come off the line in Canada.

In 2002, while still with Larrivée, he started building Tinker guitars to explore his own construction ideas. To date, Ed has built over 350 guitars from scratch in his own shop. In 2012 he launched Halcyon Guitars (named for the Tea Party song ‘Halcyon Days’) in an effort to bring hand built craftsmanship to a wider market.

Ed’s reverence for the construction process and attention to detail is clear in every guitar produced, customized to his client’s specific needs. Extensive deflection and resonance testing is conducted on each guitar to ensure a rich, resonant instrument with powerful volume and exceptional tonal and string to string balance.

Currently, Ed builds his instruments in his new 1200ft2 workshop in Nanaimo, BC. On a rare day off, Ed enjoys sound engineering, archery and fishing.

Bernard Funston, Funston Guitars

Bernard Funston began building guitars about 25 years ago. He launched Funston Guitars in 2005 to begin selling his instruments in a market seldom considered by others: the circumpolar North, including northern Canada, Alaska, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Finland. He is now based in SIDNEY, BC where he and Reuben Forsland of JOI Guitars share a luthier workshop.

His repertoire includes flamenco, classical, steel string acoustic, solid body & hollow body electrics, mandolins and a new small-bodied bass instrument called the “Arbutar” (made from arbutus). His instruments have made their way into the hands of musicians all over the world. In 2020 two Funston mandolins, made of sustainable paulownia grown on Jimmy Carter’s property in Georgia, were commissioned for the 10-instrument President Carter Legacy Collection. Funston’s work has been showcased in guitar shows, winning the People's Choice Award at the Ottawa Guitar Show in 2014.

Funston Guitars is committed to putting the finest quality, personalized guitars in the hands of musicians and music lovers alike.
