I am sorry to announce that due to circumstances beyond our control, we are unable to reopen Hooked On Books.

I would like to thank all of our loyal customers and our community for their support over the last seven years, we were looking forward to many more. I am disappointed that the decision to not continue serving Penticton and the surrounding area was made for us. Thank you to everyone for their patronage.

Background information



Nancy Wise is the owner of Sandhill Book Marketing Ltd., a Kelowna based book distribution company formed in 1984. For over 30 years, the company has specialized in the sales and distribution of independently published and small press books. Sandhill has a large retail customer base of independent bookstores, chain stores, wineries and specialty accounts across the country. Some of Sandhill’s bestsellers include Allen Carr’s Easy Way to Stop Smoking (over 185,000 copies sold), the bestselling Whitewater Cooks series and Rebar Modern Food Cookbook among many others.



In addition to managing the distribution company, Nancy has also published five titles under the imprint of Sandhill Publishing. She is the co-author of the highly successful How to Self Publish and Make Money with Marion Crook which, until it went out of print after selling almost 10,000 copies, served as an introduction to the Canadian book industry for those who are new to it.



Nancy is a member of the Association of Book Publishers of British Columbia and has served on their executive board. She has served as a cultural funding committee member on the Advisory board for the BC government. She has taught on the topics of publishing and distribution in adult education programs at community colleges in BC. Speaking engagements and seminar presentations have included the Association of Book Publishers of BC, the Saskatchewan Publishers Assn, the Kootenay School of Writing, the Surrey Branch of the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers (CAPS) and the Canadian Authors Association.

20 Tips for Writing a Prize-Worthy Short Story

The short story is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. Today's readers are busier than ever and have more and more distractions and temptations for their time. Many of them, especially the younger ones, are opting to read on portable devices such as e-readers, tablets, and even smartphones, and the short story is the perfect escapism-byte for their lunch break or while waiting for an appointment.



This is the perfect time to gain a following for your short fiction. But how to do that? With all the short story contests and anthologies inviting submissions, your story needs to be compelling, tight, well-written, and error-free to be chosen as a winner or finalist. Jodie Renner will share 20 tips for creating a short story worthy of being chosen for publication.
