Kat and Alistair are 17 and almost 21! I am so, so proud of them. They are kind, thoughtful and so smart. They are beautiful people and I love them beyond measure.

Recently the Ottawa Business Journal did a piece on women entrepreneurs in Westboro. A fun fact - we have double the national average of thriving women owned businesses right here in Westboro. Why is that? I don’t really have the answer. But for me and my shop, I put it down to three things.

One, my own tenacity. I didn’t have an ounce of experience when it came to running a business. But when I bought the shop, the previous owner (a woman) took the time to show me the ropes. And then I dug in and learned how to do it on my own.

Two, I made friends with other shop owners. All women. Our common thread was and still is to determine our own success and lift up each other at the same time. When one small business succeeds, it is a win for all of us. I truly believe this and it is an absolute honour to be part of it. I’m the first to brag about another shop that’s killing it.

And, finally, three. This shop wouldn’t be the success it is without our community. The OBJ quoted me as saying that running a shop in an affluent neighborhood helps immensely. I don’t like this. I think it sounds like it’s only people with disposable income that matter. Westboro isn’t just affluent. And my shop isn’t just for people who can afford extras. Affluence isn’t more important or better. It’s just one small part of the whole.

And it’s International Women’s Day. Many of us have been dealt a good hand. It’s never a bad idea to give another woman the opportunity. Isn’t that the whole point?
