La plupart ne sauront pas quoi répondre. Voici pourquoi c'est important :

UL 2849 teste tout le système ensemble — le bloc-batterie, le BMS, le chargeur, le vélo. Pas uniquement les cellules à l'intérieur.

Une batterie fabriquée avec des cellules Samsung haut de gamme peut quand même prendre feu si le boîtier est bon marché, les soudures fragiles ou le BMS de mauvaise qualité.

Cellules certifiées ≠ bloc-batterie certifié.

New York et la Californie exigent déjà la certification UL 2849 sur tous les nouveaux vélos électriques vendus. Le reste du pays suit.

Si votre revendeur ne peut pas vous montrer le sceau UL sur la batterie — tournez les talons.

La sécurité de votre famille n'est pas une simple case à cocher.

Ask your eBike retailer this one question. Watch them squirm.

"Is the entire battery PACK certified under UL 2849 / 2271 — not just the cells?"

Most will fumble. Here's why that matters:

UL 2849 tests everything together — the pack, the BMS, the charger, the bike. Not just the cells inside.
A battery built with premium Samsung cells and other brands can still catch fire if the casing is cheap, the solder joints are weak, or the BMS cuts corners.

Certified cells ≠ a certified pack.

New York and California already mandate UL 2849 on all new eBike sales. The rest of the country is following.

If your retailer can't show you the UL seal on the battery — walk out.

Your family's safety isn't a spec sheet checkbox.

Big news at Scooteretti this week — CBC News Ottawa came into our store to sit down with our founder for an interview on a topic we care deeply about: the proposed reclassification of electric bikes in Ontario.

Ontario's rules on e-bikes have actually always been clear. A power-assisted bicycle cannot exceed 500 watts or 32 km/h. Every bike we sell meets those standards — because that's what the law requires, and because our customers deserve products that are safe and legal to ride.

What has changed is the market around us. Too many retailers are openly selling and advertising electric vehicles that far exceed those limits — and calling them e-bikes anyway. That's misleading to consumers, dangerous on shared infrastructure, and unfair to businesses that play by the rules.

Ontario's proposed two-class framework is a step in the right direction. But it only works if it comes with real enforcement and real consequences for those who don't comply.

We were grateful for the opportunity to share that perspective with CBC. Stay tuned for the story.
