This is why the main ingredient in my body butters is Shea butter! It leaves the skin feeling silky soft and moisturized during the cold winter months. Many popular brands are actually mostly water, which is why the feeling of your skin after using a water based lotion is so different to that of a Shea butter base.
Water in lotions isnโt necessarily bad, but when the predominant ingredient is water and emollient the good stuff in there is significantly watered down. What many companies will do when they want to make a lotion thicker and more akin to a butter is to simply add more emulsifier. This gives the product the thick, creamy feel of a body butter without increasing the amount of actual butters in it. (Hence how drug store brands can sell for $4).
As a psoriasis sufferer skin care is something that is absolutely essential for me, especially during the winter months. I started making body butters a few years ago when I found it difficult to find products that didnโt have harsh ingredients that would burn on my sensitive skin. I kept the ingredients as natural as possible and crafted butter and oil based formulas that donโt require added emollient and preservatives. The transformation of my skin was amazing!
