We are so excited to announce that Sutton Bay Honey is growing!!

We have purchased Walker's Honey and you will soon see our honey in local stores in Timiskaming district. We want to send out a huge thank you to Geoff Walker for his help this summer with the transition. He has been a wealth of knowledge and suggestions.

Our goal is continue Geoff's tradition of bringing you high quality, raw, unpasteurized, wildflower honey. We have also been having some fun with specialty honey's and will have comb honey, smoked honey, and hot pepper honey at the Riverside Farmer's Market tomorrow.

We want to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thanks to our loyal customers, for their support over the last 8 years.

As some of you know, we have sold our business to Sutton Bay Honey. We have worked closely with them over the past few months and I am confident in their ability to look after the bees and even surpass the quality of honey we produced.

We have been busy extracting and bottling honey this past week. As in years' past, we are taking honey orders that we will deliver to your residence or place of work over the next few days. Please send us a PM if you would like fresh jars of honey delivered to you (if you live in the tri-towns 😀). $15 for 1KG jars and $8 for the 500G jars. Also, please note that we will reimburse you $1 for empty jars. We sterilize and re-use the jars. But not the lids unfortunately. Thanks!

Last week we checked back in on the bees to see how hard they’ve been working in this beautiful weather. ☀️

We found that the nuc hives are getting very strong, and will be able to move into full size bee boxes for winter.

Our strongest hive had capped honey ready to go, with more frames that will be ready in the coming weeks. We added some more storage to ensure the bees don’t outgrow their home.

I thought fellow beekeepers would appreciate this beautiful frame of honey ready for extraction. We are experiencing a significant nectar flow in Northern Ontario. The heat and intermittent rain has been wonderful for the flowers. I would assume that local gardens are thriving as well.

Last week we checked in on our honey bees in the propane yard. This heat has had them very busy!
The original hives were strong enough that we were able to add two new nuc hives, which will welcome Queens this week.

I love these handmade beeswax made by my northern ontario friends @walkers_honey and I also love that they have landed on the shelf of my husbands store @summerhillmkt

I use them to wrap my herbs, cheese any leftovers going in the fridge and for school lunches and of course they are amazing for the environment ❤️

We collected another trailer full of honey this past weekend. We sure are grateful for the help with the heavy lifting....

We collected another trailer full of honey this past weekend. We sure are grateful for the help with the heavy lifting. Each box is a minimum of 30 lbs.
As the season comes to an end, we remove honey supers and double check to make sure the hives are strong and healthy going into the winter. For example, we ensure the Queens are alive and healthy and that the hives have plenty of bees and honey stores. If a hive is weak, we combine them with another to ensure their survival. And finally, we treat for varroa mites. A big thank you to Anna, Sam, Willie, Glenn and Ian for their help this past weekend!

With this beautiful weather, honey should be ready by early August. We have lots of fireweed 30ft from the bee yard. Fireweed nectar makes a delicious clear, almost transparent honey.

10,000 bees swarm New Liskeard woman's truck

Just a reminder that we are heading into swarm season in Northern Ontario. Please do not panic if you come across a swarm of honey bees. Honey bees are very docile and will not bother you. Don't hesitate to contact a local beekeeper if a swarm lands on your vehicle and you can't get home :)

Here's last night's swarm capture on the Haileybury West Road. It sure was a simple one (not too entertaining). Hopefully the rain stops soon and the bees can settle down and start foraging. I'm thinking this weather is causing an unusual number of swarms. A big thanks to the Brown family for last night's call.

Walker’s Honey donated a couple of hives to the City of Temiskaming Shores Fitness Centre Community Garden. You may have seen our enclosure by the New Liskeard Waterfront. This is a video of the process of creating these hives from start to finish. I hope you find bees as interesting as I do :). A big thank you once again to Tamara Fishley and Grant Propane for editing this video. As well as a thank you to Jeff Thompson and the The Corporation of the City of Temiskaming Shores for involving honey bees in our community. This was certainly a good trade – honey bee publicity for garden pollination services.
