Au revoir…soon! 🇫🇷

I’m jumping on a plane in a week! I’m excited, but it’s also hard to be heading straight for the most romantic city in the world, fulfilling a dream to sit courtside at the French Open, without my favourite person beside me.

When Michael passed last June, his sisters told me, “One year from now, we’ll all be in Paris together.”

And now, somehow, the anniversary of losing him is almost here. I can’t believe it, but time is clearly not waiting for my heart and head to catch up.

I’m thankful for those promises made a year ago.

A Start. 🤎

I haven’t crocheted since summer camp when I was 14.

But 2 nights ago I got tired of mindlessly scrolling and on a whim charged out to a craft store near closing time, looking for something intentional to occupy and calm the loud void in my brain.

I found yarn I liked and read the instructions just enough to find out what kind of needle I needed. In the overwhelming tool aisle I met a beautiful older lady who was struggling to find what she needed too. We talked about the cost of everything; she remembered when needles were a dollar for a package.

I found one for her and she found one for me – sharing with me her opinions on size and shape. She apologized for ‘intruding’ on my decision, when in reality she helped me more than she could have known.

I cried the whole way home.

Not in sadness, but because I’ve missed the beauty that can come from in-person connections with a stranger.

Apparently it’s a lofty goal for a first-timer to make a massive blanket, but I don’t care.

I watched 30 seconds of an instructional video to remind myself how to start, and did just that – I started.

For the last 2 evenings I’ve left my phone on the charger and I’ve found my own rhythm. My head has been quiet, not blank and numb, just quiet.

I have no idea what I’m doing, and I’m sure my progress is riddled with mistakes. I’m not counting stitches or doing anything according to a plan.

I’m just doing it.

This blanket is going to be huge, and surely lopsided. But, that’s kind of the point.

One day I’ll wrap myself in this blanket and it will be a soft reminder of what it takes to move forward – missing stitches and awkward knots included.
