We are a locally owned, family business proudly serving Nanaimo and the Mid-island area for 26 years (since 1993!), and now the whole world with our online store. Located in Nanaimo, the store has moved four times since opening to accommodate the ever-expanding inventory. Originally catering to teachers, the store now carries a giant variety of toys, games, puzzles, science and art supplies for all ages, in addition to workbooks and teaching supplies. OUR HISTORY:
Our journey to become Kool and Child - Vancouver Island's largest specialty retail toy and teaching supply store - began back in 1965 in Toronto, Ontario. Grandparents, Louise and Kees Kool, immigrated to Canada from Holland and wanted to provide quality toys and learning materials for their grandchildren. was a school catalogue supply house selling across Canada. Morris Kool, made yearly trips across the country with a truckload of merchandise to attend teacher displays. When Kees passed away in 1979, Morris fulfilled a long held dream to move to the west coast, so the business was sold. He represented the old company for five years as a sales rep and then left to form his own wholesale company, offering quality educational lines to Canadian toy stores. That company, J & M Kool Ltd., was based in Vancouver, but when he and his daughter, Carolyn, came to Nanaimo in 1993, the wholesale company became a retail store and Kool & Child was born.
