We almost told you the quilt code story. Then we checked the sources. Historians who spent decades on Underground Railroad research (including the New Jersey Historical Commission) found no documentation: no slave narratives, no abolitionist writings, no surviving coded quilts. The tale comes from a single oral account published in 1999.

We’re not telling you this to take something away. We’re telling you because the real history, women quilting together under impossible conditions, teaching skill and holding community through craft, doesn’t need embellishment to be worth honoring.
