When 𝕮𝖍𝖊𝖛𝖆𝖑𝖍𝖔𝖒𝖒𝖊 reached out to take the latest electric banjo for a spin before it ships to its forever home, I didn’t expect him to roll through with his entire pedalboard - but I’m glad he did 🙌🏼

I’m pretty sure these kinds of textures are exactly what TomCollinsBanjo and Snargle Fleem had in mind when they first reached out about doing away with the traditional drumhead. Pretty dang cool 🪕⚡️🪐

Here is the last electric banjo in a series of 3 similar custom instruments completed recently. This one is a standard 5 string (tuned g D G B D) with no drumhead, sporting Ozark accoutrement: namely the aluminum body banding, floating aluminum bridge and nickel plated Art Deco tailpiece. Spanish cedar body with reclaimed “faux abalone” drum wrap top, torrefied maple neck and Lollar Pickups La Prima mini humbuckers. Spunky!

Meet Cassiopeia, the second custom build out of the shop for TomCollinsBanjo ✨🧜🏻

Serving as the sister piece to Tom’s 5+1 electric banjo, Poseidon: the name draws from the myth of a queen who boasted that her beauty surpassed even the sea nymphs (the Nereids). Her hubris enraged Poseidon, who banished her to the night sky. Tied to her celestial throne, she spends half of every rotation hanging upside down in the heavens…an eternal lesson in humility.

This is the second instrument made from a reclaimed Montréal public piano, hand painted by Thaïla Khampo - an attempt at keeping the spirit of a great initiative alive while breathing life into a brand new instrument.

About nine years ago I dismantled a public piano which had been beautifully painted by Montreal artist and friend Thaïla Khampo for the borough of Little Italy…a stone’s throw from the shop. This great outdoor public initiative livens entire neighbourhoods during the summer months, enabling amateurs and budding pianists alike to noodle anything from a few whimsical notes to entire Rachmaninov concertos (I’ve seen it!) across the city’s parks. Once the season comes to a close, these instruments are usually destined for the dump site after weeks of exposure to the elements…

This is the second instrument I’ve made from reclaimed and painted public piano parts, and is an attempt at keeping the spirit of a great initiative alive while at the same time breathing life into a brand new instrument.

This one was made for my friend TomCollinsBanjo and will be his second foray with me, in the wild world of electric (drum-less) banjos…a concept Tom dreamt up entirely on his own - Truly honoured to have him commission this second instrument.

Cherry body, roasted maple neck, Rosewood fingerboard - with a Novak DeArmond gold foil in the neck position and a Lollar Deluxe Foil in the bridge.

This six string (5+1) electric banjo started its life as a Formica diner-style kitchen table, found on the sidewalk near our shop.

The instrument is built with a Spanish cedar core, a back capped with 100 year old locust from Snargle Fleem ’s backyard and a torrefied maple neck with an asymmetrical, semi-slotted headstock.

The banjo also features a tunneled 6th string, an ebony board and bridge, a frailing scoop and the classic Ozark aluminum banding/Art Deco tailpiece combo.
Loaded with two shimmery Lollar Pickups Deluxe Foil gold foils that you can split via the push/pull volume pots.

This beauty is Ottawa-bound as we speak. Thank you for your trust, patience, and incredible design input, Scott! I can’t wait to hear it roar through your always evolving rig ⚡️🪕⚡️

This uber cool 25.5” scale 5+1 electric banjo started its life as a Formica diner-style kitchen table, found on the side of the road near our shop. This is the second stringed offspring the table has yielded (including roadrunner guitars ’ very own Ozark⚡️).
