Verdi’s Requiem

The Orpheus Choir and Resound Choir – featuring Natalya Gennadi, soprano, Danielle MacMillan, mezzo soprano, Marcel d’Entremont, tenor, and Dion Mazerolle, bass, as soloists—perform Verdi’s Messa da Requiem. Sometimes referred to as “an opera in ecclesiastical robes,” Verdi’s Requiem combines the liturgical mass with Verdi’s undeniable dramatic flair. Originally intended to be part of a multi-composer commemorative mass for fellow Italian composer Giacchino Rossini, after those plans fell through Verdi opted to write Requiem on his own years later. Composed in a highly Romantic style, this Requiem combines the might of a symphony orchestra with a full chorus and soloists. Many of the sections may be instantly recognizable from their use in contemporary movies as well: the Dies Irae, for instance, was popularized in Armageddon (1998), and often features in move trailers including battle scenes.

The Gryphon Trio premieres Canadian composer Gary Kulesha’s (Order of Canada 2023) new work, Concerto for Piano Trio and Strings. This novel take on the concerto genre sees the more typical solo instrument replaced instead by a trio of instruments, suggesting a dialogue with the Baroque Concerto Grosso genre.

Stravinsky’s Apollon Musagète, sometimes shortened to just Apollo, is the music for a ballet in which the Greek god Apollo teaches the Muses their arts. The music adopts a neo-classical and neo-Baroque style, mimicking at various points the French overture, arias, and the theme and variation genre. Motivically, the music begins with a sixteenth–dotted eighth–sixteenth rhythm that Stravinsky develops in increasingly elaborate and virtuosic ways over the course of the piece.

KALEIDOSCOPIC SENTIMENTS

Valses Nobles et Sentimentales harkens back to Schubert, who published two sets of waltzes entitles “noble” and “sentimental.” Ravel combines both in his set of waltzes, though his modernist musical language, rife with dissonance and extra chord tones that create unique sound colours, could not be further from Schubert’s classical style.

Michael Berkovsky then performs George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Gershwin’s most famous piece, it ushered in a new era of American music, infusing Black musical idioms into concert music by making use of the blues scale, derived from the African practice of using “blue” or “bent” notes, typically represented by lowering the 5th or 7th scale degrees, and folk-like syncopated rhythmic motifs.

Scriabin’s symphonic Poem of Ecstasy concludes the program. Scriabin, who suffered from synesthesia, associated notes with different colours, and this work makes prominent use of a variety of different sound colours, including whole-tone scale, as well as harmonies developed from Scriabin’s signature “mystic chord.”
