Do you know…?

Football, a game so central to American culture, actually originated in Cambridge! On May 14, 1874, Harvard University and McGill University entered a two-day game of rugby and football. These games were played on Jarvis Field in Cambridge, marking the first formal games of North American-style football.

McGill and Harvard had different playing styles. To compromise, the contest followed Harvard’s rules the first day and McGill’s rules the second day. McGill’s version included an oval ball and permitted kicking. Players could also pick up the ball and run with it whenever they wanted. Harvard’s version allowed players to run with, throw, or pass the ball only if being pursued by an opponent.

Harvard won the game with a score of 3-0!
