I did something that I am very proud of and was so excited to be a part of. I saw a request on Facebook for someone to recreate a hat that is their mom's, as a gag gift for the holidays. The original hat was knit (see last photo of the original), but I offered to recreate the hat in the craft I knew, crochet.
She accepted my offer to crochet them and requested 10 identical hats with slight variations (without the cuffed brim) and explained, "So my parents immigrated to Canada, and this hat came along with my mom. She insists itβs still good enough, but we gently razz her every winter when it comes out. We always go for a walk on Christmas as a family, so we are just all going to put it on when she wears hers ππ. Sheβll get such a kick out of it." So fun!!!
After a week of crochet attempts and being somewhat disappointed in the results in the waistcoat stitch, which makes the hat denser, I decided to try my hand at knitting the hats!
It took about a week and 4 additional attempts to get my tension to a point where I was content, and then I went to work, with her approval to then knit the 10 hats instead of crochet.
Ten days later and voila, 10 knit hats!!! I am thrilled with the outcome of free hand knitting them and with just how close they are to the original! These hats are worked in the round, allowing for a seamless finish. I am so inspired now to learn more knitting techniques and to fine tune this new to me craft!
I can't wait to see a photo of them all out on their holiday walk, wearing their hats! I hope this makes their mom's heart so happy!
