๐ŸŒฟ Welcome to Urban Herb Hunt! ๐ŸŒฟ
Most people think they need to head deep into the wilderness to find useful plants.
The truth is, our cities are packed with edible and medicinal plants hiding in plain sight. Parks, back alleys, fence lines, vacant lots, sidewalks, and green spaces are often full of wild herbs that people walk past every day.

In fact, Alberta Wildcraft started this way. Long before there was a business, I was exploring Edmonton's parks and back alleys, learning about the incredible plants growing all around us.

So let's have some fun!

๐Ÿ“ธ Your Mission: Find the plant in today's post growing somewhere in your community and share a photo in the comments.

๐ŸŒฟ 1 point for correctly identifying the plant. ๐Ÿ“ท 1 point for sharing your own photo. ๐Ÿƒ Bonus point if you know how it's been traditionally used.

Keep in mind that many of the photos I'll be sharing were taken in late summer, so the plants you find today may look quite different depending on the season, growth stage, or whether they're flowering, seeding, or just emerging for the year.

The goal isn't to harvest everything you findโ€”it's to get outside, look around and see qhats available to you !
To learn what's growing around you and start seeing your city through a different lens.

I don't usually use fancy harvesting equipment. Most days it's just me, a basket, and my hands. ๐ŸŒผ

But as Alberta Wildcraft grows, I have to start using my hands a little more wisely.

This little berry picker has been an absolute game changer for harvesting dandelion flower heads. What used to take forever now goes much faster, which means more time for processing, packaging, homeschooling, and everything else that comes with running a family business.

If you're wondering why I'm using a berry picker on dandelions in this video... now you know! ๐Ÿ˜„

And if anyone wants the Amazon link for the picker, let me know in the comments. I got two in a pack.

Not affiliated, not sponsored, and definitely not a paid promotionโ€”just sharing a tool that's made my life a whole lot easier.

๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒน Coming Soon: Boreal Rose Tea
Where Alberta's forests meet Alberta's wild roses.
Crafted with pine needles, spruce needles, cedar, and rose petals, this aromatic blend offers a smooth evergreen flavor with a delicate floral finish.
We're currently bagging and labeling this beautiful new tea and can't wait to share it with you.
Who's ready to try it? ๐ŸŒฒโ˜•๐ŸŒน

๐ŸŒผ Dandelion Salve Recipe ๐ŸŒผ
One of the questions I get most often is what to do with all those dandelion flowers. One of my favorite uses is a simple infused salve.
Basic Dandelion Salve Recipe: ๐Ÿƒ 4 cups olive oil
๐ŸŒผ 1 cup dried dandelion petals
๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ Beeswax to your preferred hardness
Gently infuse the petals into the oil using your preferred method, strain, then add beeswax until you reach the consistency you like.
You can also add other skin-loving plants such as: ๐ŸŒฟ Plantain ๐ŸŒฟ Stinging nettle ๐ŸŒฟ Calendula ๐ŸŒฟ Yarrow ๐ŸŒฟ Chickw**d
I prefer using dried herbs whenever possible. Drying helps concentrate the plant material, extends shelf life, and greatly reduces the risk of mold that can occur when fresh plants introduce moisture into the oil.
And if you'd rather skip the work and want a tried-and-true herbal salve that's been a customer favorite for years, keep an eye on our website. Our Plantain & Dandelion Balm will be available again soon, made with carefully selected herbs and slow-infused oils right here at Alberta Wildcraft. ๐Ÿƒ๐ŸŒผ
Have you ever made your own herbal salve? Let me know what plants you like to use!

๐ŸŒผ No fancy equipment. No big production.
Just a basket, a sun hat, and a field full of dandelions.
Some people see w**ds. I see ingredients, medicine, food, and a connection to the land.
Three quiet minutes spent gathering dandelion petals while the birds sing and the kids play nearby. These petals will be going directly into our Plantain & Dandelion Balm, which will be available again soon.
From flower to finished product, every batch starts right here.
Do you leave the dandelions in your yard, or do you pick them too? ๐Ÿƒ

Look what I picked up for 20 bucks!! No more holding my phone or proping it up in the plants!

This current batch is noticeably softer to chew than some of our previous winter batches ๐ŸŒฒ

The warmer weather and freely flowing pine resins this time of year can sometimes create a gum thatโ€™s more elastic, less brittle, and easier to work into a chew.

This batch:
โ€ข Shatters less
โ€ข Crumbles less
โ€ข Warms into a chew easier
โ€ข Has a softer, smoother start

One of the interesting things about real wild resin gum is that every batch behaves a little differently depending on season, resin flow, and the trees themselves.

No fillers. No stabilizers. Just real boreal spruce and pine resin.

Most people see Hemp-nettle as just another prickly w**dโ€ฆ but this wild mint-family plant has a long history in folk herbalism. ๐ŸŒฟ
Traditionally used in teas for coughs, chest irritation, and as a mild spring tonic, h**p nettle contains tannins, flavonoids, trace minerals, and aromatic plant compounds. It also tends to pop up in disturbed, nitrogen-rich soil โ€” often a sign the land is rebuilding itself naturally.
Not a true stinging nettle, despite the nameโ€ฆ just fuzzy, wild, and tougher-looking than it really is ๐Ÿ˜„
Have you ever noticed h**p nettle growing around your property?

Thereโ€™s something pretty special about walking outside in the morning, harvesting your breakfast from the land, and having your kids right there learning it too ๐ŸŒฟ
This morning Ava helped me gather fresh stinging nettles from around our farmhouse for scrambled eggs. Nettles are one of my favourite wild spring foods โ€” rich, earthy, and packed with goodness.
Avaโ€™s official review: โ€œDefinitelyโ€ฆ Iโ€™ll give it 8/10โ€ ๐Ÿ˜„
Wild food. Real skills. Real childhood.
Have you ever tried stinging nettles before

๐ŸŒฟ Stinging nettle is one of those plants that completely changes once you learn about it.
What most people call a painful w**d has traditionally been used for: ๐ŸŒฟ nourishing teas
๐ŸŒฟ soups and cooked greens
๐ŸŒฟ mineral support
๐ŸŒฟ seasonal wellness
๐ŸŒฟ joint support
๐ŸŒฟ and overall herbal nutrition
Itโ€™s rich in minerals, grows aggressively, survives harsh conditions, and comes back stronger every year.
Honestly, plants like this make me rethink what a โ€œw**dโ€ even is.
Iโ€™ve been harvesting it straight from the property, cooking with it, drying it for tea, and even working with the sting itself.
Tell meโ€ฆ How do YOU use stinging nettles? ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ‘‡
