Puerto Rican nationalist, Lo**ta Lebrón carried out an armed attack on on the US capital in 1954. Her image is symbolic of the Latinx struggle for justice, appearing here on an original 1970s vintage silkscreen from the famed La Raza Graphics Centre in San Francisco. La Raza Graphics Centre was formed in 1968 by Chicano activists to produce posters in support of the “Los Siete” Defence Committee and to raise funds for the legal aid of seven youth who were falsely accused of killing a police officer.

Also pictured, a lipiko or makipo (which means helmet) body mask from the Makonde people of modern day Tanzania, Mozambique and Kenya. An agrarian based matrilineal society, they continue to defy pressures to convert to colonial religion and capitalist models. Worn during ceremony, often to celebrate, honour and communicate significant community truths and events around power, gender, and death.
