1961 Fender Brownface Super Amp – Pristine, Collector‑Grade Condition (6G4‑A)
A rare chance to own one of Fender’s most expressive early‑’60s amplifiers in truly exceptional condition. This 1961 Brownface Super, featuring the 6G4‑A circuit, has been preserved with extraordinary care and presents as close to “like new” as a 64‑year‑old amp can reasonably be. It’s a museum‑worthy example of the Brownface era — warm, dynamic, harmonically rich, and unmistakably Fender.
Condition
- Pristine, collector‑grade cosmetics with original tolex, grille cloth, faceplate, and hardware
- Original electronics throughout, unmodified and fully functional
- No extra holes, mods, or non‑essential repairs
- Does not include a footswitch, but comes with a beautiful custom‑made leather cover
Transformers
All three major transformers are the correct Schumacher units for an early‑1961 6G4‑A Super, and their condition is exceptional:
- Power Transformer: 125P5B — crisp factory stamping, clean bells, original leads, no corrosion
- Output Transformer: 45216 — immaculate finish, untouched solder joints, perfect alignment
- Choke: 125C1A — original lacquer intact, no rust or flaking
It’s extremely rare to find a Brownface Super where all the original Schumacher iron is this clean and this well‑preserved. These components are the heart of the amp’s tone and a major part of its collector value.
Speakers
The only change in the amp’s lifetime occurred in the mid‑1970s, when the original speakers were replaced with a pair of brand‑new Alnico CTS speakers. These are not the factory‑correct speakers for a 1961 Super, but they are excellent vintage units in their own right and pair beautifully with the Brownface circuit’s tonal character.
Why This One Stands Out
Finding a Brownface Super is difficult. Finding one in pristine, near‑mint condition, with all original Schumacher iron in immaculate shape, original circuitry, and a lifetime of careful ownership is almost unheard of.
