Intended to heat directly on your wood or coal burning stove
About 7” long, 5” tall; $42

* Antique Cast-Iron Sad-Iron

From time to time, Mrs Livingston encounters items that speak to a very specific moment in history and to a very specific PERSON experiencing that moment.

During the liberation of the Netherlands by Canadian forces in late 1944 and the spring of 1945, Canadian soldiers commonly acquired traditional Dutch wooden clogs (klompen) as war souvenirs. Soldiers frequently personalized these mementos by carving or writing their names, ranks, service numbers, and unit acronyms directly onto the wooden soles to mark their service.

This pair would have belonged to a Soldier named Len or Leonard, first or last name.
He was a Sapper (SPR), the military rank equivalent to Private in the Royal Canadian Engineers (RCE).
Len’s official military service number was D 162. Canadian service numbers beginning with the letter “D” designated individuals who enlisted out of Military District No. 4, headquartered in Montreal, Quebec.

This pair has already been claimed but was far too wonderful not to share.
