Do you have a phone addiction?
Our social media and smartphones were designed to make out life easier. To keep us connected.
We used Facebook to keep in touch with old friends, Twitter to see what's on the news, and Instagram to look at pretty photos.
But the addictive nature of our apps have been taking over our attention for the better part of a decade now.
If we think about it, having time to be bored, and think, is an important part of being a person. Abraham Lincoln credited his long walks of solitude as one of the things that helped him win the American Civil War.
Thinking and being bored are important, but our phones make it so whenever we have that itch, we can see what's on FB, what's on Insta, what Twitter is up to.
We can get hits of dopamine from our notifications.
Digital Minimalism is a philosophy that says we can control our technology, and reclaim our attention. It involves putting limits on our social media use, so we don't spend all day getting punked by our phones.
Especially working for myself, I find if I don't turn my phone off in the morning, I get punked all day by social media.
