Throwback to September 2023. Closing up our cozy kitchen space in the Junction, Toronto. 

We started Mamey, because we wanted to explore a sacred food that had been such a big part of our lives. We navigated that in the thick of 2020. Living in different cities. Meeting over Zoom for weeks daydreaming, planning  and recipe testing. Not knowing just how big it would get and how many people we would introduce to this delicious food. We used to joke that our business was part food and part education. And we really did enjoy sharing stories and history about this food. 

Clarissa and I recorded a conversation together just after closing. Musings over how it felt to tie up such a big chapter of running a pop-up tamales shop across 3 and half years and two cities. The ups, the downs and the lessons, which we will share in the near future ;)

Grateful for the journey that was Mamey. And grateful to be here now exploring new ways to share the tamales love through knowledge sharing.

Ingredient appreciation🌽❤️

Throwback to Spring when we purchased this very special masa harina (corn flour). Single origin white heirloom corn from Mexico. This corn flour has been a dream to work with and the flavour is unmatched to other flours i've tried. There's a buttery note which makes it so versatile in different doughs!

So far we've made tamales, pupusas, tortillas and im so excited to incorporate it into our upcoming session for Cacao Tamales🫔. We'll be using banana leaf to wrap the tamales which brings out a really special flavour✨️

A Spring time TAMALADA 🫔

Spring is slowly emerging , and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome it with our upcoming tamales-making workshop!

This event is inspired by a beautiful ‘Tamalada’ we hosted this Winter Solstice—a cherished gathering in our home where friends, family, and community came together to share stories, laughter, and the joy of making tamales.

A ‘tamalada’is all about connection, creativity, and tradition, and that’s exactly the energy we aim to bring to this workshop.

In this session, reminiscent of our Tamales 101, we’ll open with introductions and ground ourselves into the space with some mindfulness practice and then delve into the rich history of tamales and types of leaves used for wrapping them. From there, we’ll guide you through creating the perfect “masa” (dough) and share delicious filling options: chicken (sourced from the amazing ), red chili sauce, black beans, and cotija cheese.

Spots are still available. We can’t wait to share this special experience with you and bring the flavors, stories, and tradition of tamales-making to life. Feel free to reach out with any questions.

FAREWELL FOR NOW 🫔🫔🫔🩷

The way we create is evolutionary, the way we love, the way we show up for one another is evolutionary. This chapter of Mamey Tamales has been evolutionary for us both.

Hamilton and Toronto you have shown us so much love along the way and we can't thank you enough. After 3 beautiful years, we have made the difficult decision to close this chapter of Mamey Tamales.

It has been an absolute honour sharing this sacred and beautiful food with you and we can't thank you all enough for the support and love along the way. All of you who came to our pop ups, pre-ordered, subscribed, requested catering, mentored us, opened your doors and hosted us, checked in along the way and most of all, to our family, chosen family, and partners, Thank you! Thank youu!!!

Over the last few years we have shared with you in many beautiful ways, Pop Up Collaborations, Tamal making classes & special shout out to and sister stores for carrying our frozen packs in your stores.

We are filled with so much gratitude for everything this journey has taught and gifted us.

As creatives we will continue to alchemize our ideas and gifts and we can't wait to share what is next!

Until then, August 30th will be our final pop up . We have a few special events lined up in the next couple weeks and one final Tamal Tuesday Delivery at the end of this month. 🚚🫔🫔🫔

We are excited to share this upcoming Thursday June 22 we will be popping up here for the start of this exciting series of film screenings in the park. 📽️🎬

TORONTO OUTDOOR PICTURE SHOW PRESENTS
ANOTHER WORLD SUMMER 2023 IN PARKS ACROSS THE CITY
From June 22 to August 27, 2023, Toronto Outdoor Picture Show proudly presents Another World, a 21-date open-air festival programme. The TOPS season will kick off with a 5-evening opening weekend of film screenings at Fort York in June, before moving the traveling show to Corktown Common, Bell Manor Park, and TOPS’ signature series, Christie Pits Film Festival, in July and August.

We will be popping up this Thursday with a special menu🤗
