Verónica Mireya Moreno Carreón (“La Flaka”), an ex-police officer from the Mexican state of Nuevo León, was working for infamous cartel, Los Zetas, at the time of her arrest in September 2011. Authorities believe that Carreón took control of Los Zetas after the prior leader, Raúl García Rodriguez, was arrested in August of the same year. Carreón was, allegedly, the first known female jefe (boss) of a major cartel and was selected as leader of the cell because of her ability to perform various operations and for her cruelty, as her duty was to organize and carry out executions and torture, collect the "rights of flat for extortion" and kidnapping ransoms, and to make drug transfers, among other functions.
