The Violin

I was born from silence, nestled within the heart of a tree.

I am the violin, the most perfect of human creations. The result of the mixing of science, mathematics, the gifts of nature, and the beauty of music. My form is not accidental but a culmination of knowledge, artistry, and the harmony found in the world around me. For centuries, I have existed not merely as an object but as a living being, bound to those who shape, play, compose, and dance with me. My existence depends on four types of human souls, each a vital thread in the tapestry of my survival: the maker, the player, the composer, and the dancer.

So, the plan was to be back in the Fiddle Shop the 1st week of May. We'll, sometimes things don't go as planned.

I am still in Nicaragua, enjoying the Central American sun and surf for a little bit longer.

June. June is always a beautiful time on PEI, and the fiddle shop doors will be open and ready to fix some fiddles and bows. (For real, I promise 😎).

For those of you who have already contacted me and are waiting, I thank you for your continued patience. 😉

Here are a few pictures of my Central American journey.

We've loaned a lot of guitars lately and the cupboard was starting to get a little bare. Right on cue, in came this lovely Norman protege B18 acoustic. Norman is one of the Seagull family of guitars. It has a solid cedar top which produces a beautiful, warm tone. A big thank you to Mark Palmer who donated the guitar along with two student violins. It just needs a simple neck adjustment and will be ready to borrow shortly. Thank you so much Mark. To borrow or donate an instrument, message us or call (902) 881-2354.

Within the confines of the violin resides a unique piece of wood, a miniature replica of the spruce tree that birthed it. Revered by craftsmen, it's delicately inserted into the instrument after meticulous assembly and varnishing. Despite its modest size, this piece, known as the soundpost, holds immense significance. It's the soul of the violin, maintaining its resonance and character with nothing but perfect placement and tension. Referred to as "l'âme" in French and "anima" in Italian, its absence or misalignment diminishes the instrument's potential, offering a profound metaphor within the realm of music and life.
