Workshop Summary:
Foundations in Indigenous Seed Keeping
How does growing for seed differ from growing for food? How do you keep seed varieties true-to-type? What are the practices you need to do to keep our at-risk cultural seed varieties genetically healthy? This intensive training workshop will provide you with a strong introduction to the foundational knowledge you need to know to successfully practice ancestrally-informed
seed keeper responsibilities. We will cover Indigenous seed keeper terms and concepts, key pollination knowledge and practices, variety selection and seed garden planning considerations, seed keeper record-keeping, seed keeper protocols, and steps to know through a seed-to-seed cycle. Throughout, participants will be introduced to seed keeper strategies for both small and
large scale growing contexts. Participants will gain an awareness of critical factors and decisions to achieve their seed garden goals and to strengthen their seed keeper journeys.
