For my First Nations, Métis, Inuit friends, family and colleagues that love to garden and have a passion for food sovereignty, please save the date for this upcoming workshop with Sovereign Seeds. It is free to attend, will include a delicious lunch and a great group of seed lovers!

Saturday, May 27, 2023 from 10am-5pm.

Workshop will include a Seed Exchange. More details and a registration link coming soon.

Workshop Summary:
Foundations in Indigenous Seed Keeping
How does growing for seed differ from growing for food? How do you keep seed varieties true-to-type? What are the practices you need to do to keep our at-risk cultural seed varieties genetically healthy? This intensive training workshop will provide you with a strong introduction to the foundational knowledge you need to know to successfully practice ancestrally-informed
seed keeper responsibilities. We will cover Indigenous seed keeper terms and concepts, key pollination knowledge and practices, variety selection and seed garden planning considerations, seed keeper record-keeping, seed keeper protocols, and steps to know through a seed-to-seed cycle. Throughout, participants will be introduced to seed keeper strategies for both small and
large scale growing contexts. Participants will gain an awareness of critical factors and decisions to achieve their seed garden goals and to strengthen their seed keeper journeys.

miskamâsowin foods inc. is official! A Gathering of People has changed its name, its branding, recipe (although still delicious!) and is officially a corporation. Our first client under our new brand? Why Indigenous Box of course! I am soooo thrilled to be working with this incredible company and am beyond excited for everyone to try our bannock mix! This is only part one of my good news, hoping to send out more next week!

miskamâsowin is the act of finding yourself and this name better fits the journey I have been on for more than a decade - the journey to reclaim my Cree heritage in order to become my whole self.

A huge thank you to Gary Hughes from Sobeys who has been instrumental in helping me figure out how to start and build a business, to Jess L who is a brilliant business person and even better friend and to every single cheerleader, bannock mix purchaser and production helper, I so appreciate you.
To my sister and my beautiful nieces whose enthusiasm and support for this venture is second to none, (other than maybe Derek Purdue), Catherine Obacz who is always ready to listen, share accounting and strategy tips, show up to bag some flour, to Mike & Debbie K. who talked me off the ledge and gave me the encouragement and confidence to continue, to Shel Zolkewich my amazing food styler and photographer friend, one's journey is never truly solitary. Thank you.
