đź’™ A Special Mother & Daughter Volunteer Story đź’™
This story is a little different from our usual volunteer spotlights. It’s a story about a mother and daughter, a shared commitment to volunteering, and a love for giving back to the community.
Meet Velma and her daughter, Lori.
Velma began volunteering with the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store when she moved to Duncan from Edmonton in 1999. But volunteering was certainly not new to her!
Before moving to Edmonton, Velma lived in Toronto, where she volunteer as a young Mom and when all her children were in school at a senior citizens’ home. In Edmonton, she continued her volunteer journey at Misericordia Hospital, where she worked in the cafeteria, served on the board, and also volunteered in hospice.
After moving to Duncan, Velma continued giving her time to others, volunteering with the Canadian Cancer Society and becoming a valued member of the Hospital Auxiliary.
And then there’s her daughter, Lori. ❤️
Lori is currently the Vice-President of the Auxiliary Board and volunteers at the thrift store a couple of days a week. You’ll find her working on the floor as a sales clerk or behind the cash register helping our wonderful customers.
Before moving to Duncan, Lori spent 35 years working for the Alberta government. She describes it as a wonderful career, but says she absolutely loves her volunteer work—and has been part of the Auxiliary for nearly five years.
Having a mother and daughter volunteering together is something very special. Both Velma and Lori are proud of the years they have given to their communities, and they especially enjoy being part of the wonderful team of volunteers at the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store.

Please enjoy reading about the life of one of our wonderful long term members Doreen was kind enough to give us a first hand life account! Enjoy and we all thank you for volunteering with the Auxilary. A life well lived! A road well traveled. I ws born an RCMP’s daughter the Kootenays. I joined the Air Force at 18; was in Germany at 19. For a small town girl, it was quite an eye opener. Married, had two children and lived in Germany 7 years. Came back to Cold Lake, Alberta; divorced and remained there for 19 years and raised my kids.

I worked for the National Defence 33 years starting as a clerk then 17 years as Secretary to Commander of the Aerospace Engineering Agency. Got my Staffing Certification as a Base Civilian Personel officer and transferred to Edmonton then Victoria. Spent my last 3 years overseeing the Employment Equity and Harassment Program for the West Coast Base.

I met David in 1988 and learned to sail. We built a house in Maple Bay in 1993. Soon after we started to travel; first to Mexico then Yuma where I cooked 6 years in an RV park and then we bought and stayed another 9 years. Due to David’s health we were grounded in 2019. That “road well traveled” was very educational but came to an end.

Grounded meant more time for the Auxiliary and to know the volunteers better. I spent 2 years on the board; got through Covid ; really found out how phenomenal voluteers are; caring dedicated, fun, compassionate. Working in a volunteer structure vs government is quite a change! AND working with women vs men takes some getting used to. A totally different atmosphenre and work ethic.

When I had to slow down, our Director, Susan, created a position and I am now the Geriatric Greeter on Friday and Saturday. It gives me purpose; a reason to stay active ,feel useful and look to the future with a good feeling.

Thank you to each and every one I work with for bringing something to my life.

We're so fortunate to have some incredibly talented gardeners volunteering at the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store! 🌿🌸
These beautiful plants were lovingly grown and donated by one of our amazing volunteers. From seed to pot, each one has been cared for with dedication and pride before finding its way to our store.
When you purchase one of these plants, you're not only taking home something beautiful for your home or garden—you’re also supporting patient care and comfort in the Cowichan Valley.

Today, our wonderful volunteer Sharon shared these gorgeous homegrown dahlias, and they quickly found new homes with delighted customers. Their vibrant colours brought smiles to everyone who saw them!

Volunteer Spotlight: Doreen Tawse-Smith
Congratulations to our wonderful volunteer, Doreen Tawse-Smith, who was recently recognized at our Annual General Meeting with her 35-year service pin.
At 96 years young, Doreen has dedicated decades of her time, energy, and heart to the Hospital Auxiliary. Most recently, she worked as a sorter in the thrift store until health issues required her to step back last month.
Over the years, Doreen has worn many hats. She has volunteered in the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store, represented the Auxiliary on the Hospital Board, served as our Publicity Manager, pushed the library cart through the hospital, delivered tea, visited with patients, and always looked forward to the many hospital bazaars that brought volunteers and the community together.
Outside of her volunteer work, Doreen enjoys an active and creative life. She is a member of the Probus Club, the Maple Bay Yacht Club, and the Cherry Point Artists, where she expresses her talent as a watercolour artist. She also loves a good game of bridge and regularly plays with a couple of groups.
Thank you, Doreen, for your extraordinary 35 years of service, your generosity, and the countless ways you've enriched our Hospital Auxiliary and community. You are an inspiration to us all.

Our volunteers at the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store work hard... but we do manage to sneak in a laugh or two along the way! After all, smiling is part of the job description.
Every donation that comes through our doors is sorted, cleaned, priced, and displayed with care by our amazing volunteers. So, if you're cleaning out your closets, cupboards, or garage, we'd love to give your treasures a second chance.
Then come back and see what everyone else has donated—you never know what treasure you'll find! Every purchase helps provide care and comfort for patients throughout the Cowichan Valley.
Stop in, say hello, share a smile, and maybe even leave with that one thing you didn't know you needed!

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight – Meet Yvonne! 🌟
Today we're celebrating one of our wonderful volunteers, Yvonne!
Yvonne moved to the Cowichan Valley from Dryden, Ontario, in 1973. At just 18 years old, she began working at a residential school, where she and one other cook prepared three meals a day for 30 staff and 200 children. She spent four years there before moving on to work at Shawnigan Lake School and later at Queen Margaret's School as a housemother, helping care for 60 students alongside another housemother.
Yvonne has been a dedicated volunteer with the Hospital Auxiliary for an incredible 30 years. She also volunteers at Cairnsmore, where she enjoys serving tea and visiting with residents, bringing kindness and companionship to so many.
She is the proud mother of two daughters and a grandmother to three granddaughters, who bring her endless joy.
When she's not volunteering, Yvonne loves to travel and embrace new adventures. This October she'll be exploring Rwanda, Tasmania, and Zanzibar—proof that it's never too late to discover something new!
Thank you, Yvonne, for your three decades of dedication, compassion, and service to our community. We are so grateful to have you as part of the Hospital Auxiliary family. ❤️
