If there’s one thing we love here @ Little Bird it’s Art! In fact our gift shop here in downtown Duncan is based on that which is beautiful & worthy of appreciation.

A quick search of that small but powerful word comes up with “Art is the conscious use of skill, imagination, & creativity to produce works that evoke emotion, ideas, or aesthetic beauty.”
Well put!

Based on that, it only makes sense that we’re participating in the upcoming
Art & Appies evening, being held next Thursday May 21st from 5pm - 8pm, sponsored by our awesome DBIA (Duncan Business Improvement Association).

This event is described as “A self-guided evening of art, appetizers & downtown discovery across six participating shops. Experience an evening of art, small bites, & downtown charm. Explore local shops, galleries & pop-exhibits - each with a small bite to enjoy.”

We’re pleased to be hosting, arguably our most colourful & prolific local artist that evening - Bara Fallows of Bara Bespoke. She has created a lovely new display of 5 original collage pieces under the name “Painting with Paper”, & hung it in her section of our gallery here @ Little Bird. Bara will be joining us in a demo sharing some of her many techniques she’s developed during her 40+ years as a creative selling artist.

The other images throughout this post are all creations of Bara's.. among others available here in the store.

Tickets are available through : downtownduncan.ca/artappies , or if you’re so inclined, use the QR code on the poster for tickets for access. Passports are issued & stamped at each participating business & completed passports can be entered to win a prize draw. Good luck!

Mother’s Day is next Sunday - March 10th in case you’re wondering.. ;-)

Here @ Little Bird we have SO many beautiful gift ideas in right now for who ever is a Mom, Mother, Mum, Ma, Grandma, &/or just a special lady in your life, that you could almost call us Mother’s Day Central!

Spring has sprung just over a week ago & here we are already rounding the corner full-on towards Easter this coming weekend! Yikes!

Here @ Little Bird we’re feeling pretty good about all the seasonal beauty we have in store to help with however you choose to celebrate. Cards, chocolates, hanging decorations, eggshell jewelry, jigsaw puzzles for hanging with family, pretty Finnish design paper napkins, candles, vintage table decor, woven table runners, you name it!

A fun coincidence I just realized… our chocolate offerings are from both sides of Canada & interestingly enough, both from coastal towns that are pretty much the oldest & one of the youngest chocolatiers in the country, with Rogers’ Chocolates coming from Victoria, B.C. since 1885 & Peace by Chocolate created in Antigonish, Nova Scotia by Syrian refugees, the Hadad family since early 2016. They now employ over 100 ++
people, & many of them refugees themselves… both wonderful success stories if you ask me & we’re so pleased to have their delicious chocolates for you.

It’s a damp Friday afternoon & I'm done with the news ;-p so I think it’s time to talk about Paper & Stationery! Why do we, especially us women, love it SO much?
I know I do.. it’s so tactile & beautiful & the more I get to work with it - as in buy & sell it here @ Little Bird Gift Store, the more I feel my heart flutter when I unpack a boxful of pretty paper goods & stationery freshly delivered to us.

Our high quality papers originate from as far away as India, Japan, Italy & China & as close as being handcrafted right here in the Cowichan Valley & brought in by the maker.

A quick search online brought me to “5 reasons why women love stationery so much”. Among the reasons are - New stationery represents a fresh start, going back as far as that feeling on the first day of school / It provides an appreciated alternative to digital communication / Stationery puts power & control into your hands.. literally, & we feel it makes us more organized & creative / Stationery with its various uses & qualities is a great way to express our own styles & selves.

Here @ Little Bird, our journals, craft packages, notecards, wrap & paper offerings are always evolving so you never quite know what you’ll discover, which is always a good reason to come back!
We carry stunning imported crafting papers & bulk wrap of various weights & widths that can be used in a myriad of ways as well as rolls of expandable paper ribbon from Japan & paper raffia made in Italy.

Recently sourced is a sweet batch of mini flower cards, paper Washi tape & themed sticker sheets from one of our newest suppliers, Ontario graphic artist Sabbie from The Paper Narwhal. Her fine creations have been popular right out of the box!

For everyday home use, our luncheon & cocktail sized paper napkins are adorned with iconic designs from the much loved Finish design house - Marimekko & the fresh colours of our recent delivery are perfect for your upcoming spring celebrations.

It’s been a while since I popped up here with some pretty pictures for you, so I spent some quiet time in the shop while we were closed this morning, clicking away. I’m not offering too many words this time around, just a store hours update & lots (& lots) of pretty Christmas inspiration shots, here @ Little Bird.

Suffice to say the store is hopping & great items are still arriving daily even now, including but not limited to, a large selection of delicious Rogers’ Chocolates, 16 fresh Christmas designs of the very popular British pop-up cards & gorgeous craft & gift items from the Japanese Paper Place in Toronto, all arriving just yesterday. (It was kinda nuts!!)

On their way, a much anticipated selection of Goldsmith Marianne Brown’s elegant drop pearls with gems on hand wound silk cord necklaces, due to arrive on Monday which will compliment her display of lovely pearl earrings already in the gallery.

Our hours are everyday up until Christmas day from 10 - 5pm except this Sunday when I’ll be open from Noon to 4pm & on Christmas Eve when we close an hour early @ 4pm.

We will close on the 25th, 26th, 27th, reopening on Monday December 29th with regular hours.

We hope to see you in the shop very soon & that you have yourselves a Merry Little Christmas!

The wonderful Clint Eastwood said it best in Dirty Harry… “Ask yourself, Do I feel lucky? Well do ya punk?” & the answer is yes! we feel like very lucky punks here @ Little Bird. Yesterday November 9th was our lucky # 8 store anniversary!

We’d just like to say Thank You So Much to all our wonderful customers over the past 8 years, it’s been great & here’s to another 8 more! 🥂

As for the store & gallery - all’s good, we’re busy, things are hopping with Christmas on the way & new beautiful things are arriving every few days, so please do come in & give us a shop!

Speaking of which, we’re open tomorrow after the observance at the cenotaph - Remembrance Day from 11:30 - 4:30, hope to see you then.

Hey - happy Fall! The days are getting shorter making us turn our attention back inside & why not focus on some simple pleasures…may I suggest something fun & tactile such as, pen & paper? What could be more basic & simple than that you may be thinking? You’d be surprised.. there’s so much variety with such basics as paper & pens & what we’re featuring here @ Little Bird is as usual, definitely beyond basic.

While we do carry some basic sheets of coloured 80-100lb crafting papers, mostly our papers are available in beautiful large sheets, usually imported & many are works of art, in my opinion.
We are happy to carry hand made & printed papers from India, Italy, Japan among other locations.
Looking for papers meant for paper-crafting, wrapping, painting, sculpting, framing, writing, folding, collaging, turning into paper fabric & you name it? We have some beautiful papers here for you! There’s much more than what’s shown here & our offering is always evolving.

As for our pens, those too are a work in progress… we have for a couple of years been carrying one of a kind locally made hand-turned wood pens by local craftsman Trevor Jones. Trevor was a Cowichan area golf course greenskeeper for over 30 years, during which time he collected many pieces of wood from various sources throughout his career, both local & exotic. Now retired, when he’s not golfing, Trevor ‘plays with different woods’😉, noting their history & drying them, making beautiful one of a kind pens, turning every special piece on his lathe to bring out the natural qualities of the individual woods.

For something completely different & discovered at last year’s Toronto Stationery Show, I’ve sourced a modern clean lined fountain pen & gel pen line from an award winning Hamburg, Germany company called stilform. Some info from their site states - “All parts are made from high grade titanium &/or aluminium, these superior materials are well know for their extremely high durability & being exceptional lightweight. The unique magnetic mechanism makes it easy to open & close the pen in just one movement & the pen’s shape makes it conveniently anti-roll. More info along with their photo.

Tomorrow is Labour Day & how better to mark it than by celebrating some of our local hard working artists who’s lovely creations we are so pleased to be able to sell, right here @ Little Bird.

In this business we are so fortunate to support so many talented people who choose to make their living day to day, creating & selling their wares online through their own sites, as well Instagram & Etsy, etc, & wholesale to shops like us here in Duncan. With the recent ruling from the president to the south of us creating significant roadblocks for all the small crafters & artists in our Country & beyond, trying to sell into their market, including some of who’s work is available here in the store, it’s even more important now to help keep them in business by purchasing some of their work.

For fun, I’m combining this Labour Day theme with the recently chosen “B.C.’s Best Symbol”, wherein the Orca whale came out as victorious. Derived from an unofficial summer-long friendly competition organized by the CBC, the runners' up were the equally iconic Totem Poles & Western Red Cedar trees.

With this in mind, I did a little tour around the store earlier today & took a pic of every Orca I saw, & fair warning… there’s a lot!! So if you’re wondering where to go to support our local artists & find B.C.’s best symbol of the summer of 2025 - Little Bird is it!

Oh, & by the way, we’re open tomorrow for your shopping pleasure, from 11am - 4pm, so please migrate over our way!
