I-Hos Gallery

I-Hos Gallery I-Hos Gallery is a First Nations Gallery and Gift Shop located in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island Our culture is expressed through our art.
(201)

I-Hos Gallery presents a collection of traditional and contemporary Northwest Coast artwork, including masks, prints, gold and silver jewelry, wood carvings and more produced by First Nations artists. We are located between Courtenay and Comox on Vancouver Island, on the site of the original K’ómoks Village. We deal directly with all of our First Nation artists and provide you with all legends and

artist biographies. The beautiful house front design of I-Hos Gallery incorporates a whale, “Queneesh” and the double headed sea serpent, “I-Hos”. These creatures represent important crests of the K’ómoks people. Standing inside of the entrance pole is a sxwayxwey (kway kway) dancer. The dancer wears a mask with protruding eyes and tongue. The dancer carries a scallop shell rattle and wears a tunic of swan feathers. This prestigious dance was a privilege of high-ranking K’ómoks families. This exceptional artwork was designed exclusively for I-Hos Gallery by Calvin Hunt in 1995 and was carved with the assistance of his nephew Mervyn Child and cousin Geary Cranmer.

I-Hos Gallery Bursary - Apply Today

At I-Hos Gallery, we are always exploring meaningful ways to support Indigenous artists. One of the main ways we do this is by purchasing artwork directly from artists whenever possible.

We also recognize the important role we can play in helping artists build their skills, confidence, and creative capacity.

The I-Hos Gallery Bursary was created to support Indigenous artists in their professional development and help them access opportunities, tools, and training that strengthen their artistic practice.

Today, Grandmother’s Voice honours Dr. Evelyn Voyageur.

Dr. Voyageur’s work reminds us that health is not only physical. It is spiritual, emotional, mental, cultural, relational, and deeply connected to community. Her leadership in Indigenous health, cultural safety, nursing education, and community-based wellness has helped open doors for safer, more respectful care.

To be guided by community means listening first. It means understanding that care is not something done to people, but something built with them. It means honouring language, culture, ceremony, family, grief, humour, and the whole person.

Today, we honour Dr. Evelyn Voyageur and every Nurse, Grandmother, Grandfather, Auntie, Uncle, Elder, Sister, Brother, Two-Spirit relative, Helper, Healer, and Caregiver who has made someone feel seen, safe, and less alone.

We cannot name every hero this week, but we know they are everywhere. If someone has cared for you, taught you, advocated for you, or helped you heal, we welcome you to share their photo or story with us.
