I organized a sewing day for Cinderella and honestly? People delivered. Herald costumes, horse vests, animal ears, ensemble dresses — done. The producer had glue on her hands. And our director was very committed to one tail for the entire day. No notes. The show opens April 24. Come see it.

"What's on your workbench today Ted?"
"Oh, nothing too big."

(And yes, it sews … sort of. PFAFF Performance Icon and tweezers included for scale)

P.S. Shannon's got a new post on our blog where she has some smart things to say about PFAFF and Singer machines. Go take a look! sewingmachinemagic.com

I was asked to repair a family quilt that’s over 50 years old and get it ready for another generation.

This reel is mostly about the repair — assessing damage, stabilizing it, patching it in a way that fits the original quilt — with just a little emotional weight sneaking in whether I wanted it to or not.

Family quilts don’t need museum-level restoration. They need thoughtful repairs, honesty, and the ability to survive the next generation of babies, pets, couch naps, and chaos.

Quilts don’t have to be perfect to be passed on. Repairs tell part of the story too.

I broke down the full repair process (and a bit more of the story) in a blog post — it’s up now if you want the details. Head to www.sewingmachinemagic.ca → Blog.

One of the most common questions I get is, “What needle do I need?”

The answer is almost always: tell me what you’re sewing.

This chart shows needle types at a glance, and I’ve got a blog up that explains how to choose the right one—and why it matters more than brand. You'll find it at sewingmachinemagic.ca → Blog

Friendly PSA:
You are, in fact, supposed to clean your self healing cutting mats.
Occasionally.
I know. Shocking.

If your mat is looking fuzzy, grimy, or like it’s been through a craft war zone, here’s what to do:

• Peel off the loose lint and fabric crap with a lint roller or tape
• Soak it in cool water + a bit of dish soap + a splash of white vinegar
• Let it sit 15–30 minutes
• Gently scrub the grooves (toothbrush or a scrubby works great)
• Rinse, lay flat, air dry — no heat, no sun

Now, if you’re changing your rotary blades and it still won’t cut properly… or if some of the grooves are missing that top coating — your mat might just be done. They do wear out. It’s not a personal failure and your sewing skills are not in question.

If you’re not sure whether your mat just needs a good clean or needs to be retired, bring it into the shop and let me take a look. I’m always happy to help you troubleshoot before you sacrifice another blade to the cause. And if it turns out it’s truly past its best-before date? You can grab a new one with us and move on with your life in peace.

Happy New Year.
Clean your tools. Replace them when they’re toast. 🖤✂️

New year. Same me.

A little wiser. A little tired. Still here.

Turning the page doesn’t mean everything’s fixed. It just means I’m done pretending it should be.

Sewing teaches us this all the time — you don’t erase the wonky seams, you adjust, rethread, and keep going.

I wrote a New Year blog post about exactly that. You’ll find it at sewingmachinemagic.ca → Blog

Christmas Eve can be a lot.
Even the good kind.

If today feels heavy, lonely, overwhelming, or just quieter than expected — you’re not doing it wrong.

We’re closed for a break, but we’ve opened something new on our website: a blog.
It’s a space for stories about sewing, making, running a small business, and being human through all of it — today there is a post about this season and why it can be hard.

There’s no pressure to read it today.
But if you need a gentle place to land, it’s there 🤍
