Last week Paul and Ruth were away. Imagine our surprise when we're sitting in a Mexican restaurant in downtown St. Catharine's with a woman who has a laminated sign sticking out of her purse which reads, "Retreat Centre Available for Rent Near Port Hope." Wait, Port Hope? That's our stomping ground. Why don't we know about this. (See first comment for that poster.)

Turns out that Calvary Baptist Church in East Toronto -- whose Pastor is also Pastor Ruth, but that's another story -- owns Ganaraksa Woods, a modest property where your church can hang out for a day, or a small group can even stay overnight over a weekend. What if the gateway to church participation and meeting Jesus doesn't involve well-planned Sunday services with great music, but starts with a yard sale where everything is free? Events like this are a way of telling the community, "We love you;" with no strings attached. Happening across Canada on the same day, Saturday June 6th from our friend Ralph's church on Vancouver Island (Highway in Sydney) to Solomon and Phoebe's church (Good News in Saint John) in New Brunswick. What if the gateway to church and to meeting Jesus doesn't involve well-dressed people on a Sunday morning, but kids having fun on a Friday night? The Salvation Army in Cobourg will tell you that Messy Church is the most exciting thing to happen in a long time. This is an outreach to families in their neighbourhood or a family you know that needs an outing for the young ones. Starts at 5:30 PM this Friday (June 5). Registration is required.

Michael Frost pointed out this morning that back in the day some of the best-selling Christian books were missionary biographies. I'm willing to bet that they not only encouraged many young people to consider Christian vocation, but also inspired people in pursuing the best in their secular vocation. Do young people today have missionary heroes? Other than the people who head organizations which have mass exposure, can they name one person who is doing something significant for the kingdom in the third world? Can they even repeat the names of the missionaries their Church supports? This is what we've lost, and are continuing to lose with each passing day that teenagers and young adults become disconnected from what The Church is doing in the broader world.
