I have a brand, spanking new Niece - In Law!!! ( I’ll drop the “in law” and call her Niece) The lovely Karley (Karley HeweyI)s my Nephew Reec’s bride. They are currently touring Europe on their honeymoon and Karley took Tallulah with her! Here she is in the Wide Leg Montreal pant at two of Rome’s great attractions: Vatican City and The Colosseum.
Do you have a favourite European City or holiday destination? Mine is Nice with Paris running a close second. I guess I am a bit of a francophile. Only the French would have a lovely word for what another language might call a bum: A fläneur (according to the Oxford Dictionary) is “a person who lounges or strolls around in a seemingly aimless way” or "an observer of urban society". I aspire to be a fläneur (or i guess the feminine fläneuse) someday.
Say hello to Karley and if you have a favourite European City, destination, attraction, restaurant etc. let her know below! They are on the move!

I had one of these yesterday. Well I was decades north of 42 when I woke up but a life affirming nap just the same.

My old pal “Barbie” is getting a lot of press these days. While I haven’t seen the movie I did watch Tiny Shoulders: Rethinking Barbie (Crave), highly entertaining from a cultural, feminist as well as business perspective. Did you know the early Barbie had a demure (submissive?) downward gaze up until the 70’s when her gaze was changed to look you straight in the eye - a sign of the times if there ever was one.
My own relationship with Barbie began on (my sister figures) my 8th birthday (see photo). Proudly showing Barbie off to the camera while giving my mother a little “stink eye” for not giving me a more Barbie worthy outfit to mark the special day.
In my early days my mother’s favourite adjective to describe a piece of clothing was “serviceable”. Talk about a dream killing, soul stifling word as well as an affront to everything my precious Barbie represented. She would say it with reverence as if no other descriptor could come close to matching the importance - the gravitas -as SERVICEABLE. Oxford tie up shoes were “serviceable”… they were also ugly… but Mum and I had a meeting of the minds and found common ground with Penny Loafers. Our cooperation over what I would wear was born in that moment and grew from there. While we never approached the ribbons, bows and gowns that Barbie wore, my mother, not being a ribbons and bows kinda gal, she did her best to indulge me when it came to expressing myself through clothes. Arriving home from the local shops with an armload “on approval” more often than not resulted in a nod and a look that said “hang those up in your closet and don’t tell your father”. (The “spoiled brat” was usually but not always, implied). None the less those were heady times!
My mother would never have described herself as a feminist but she was not deaf to the cultural shifts taking place in the 60s either. Quite often my Barbie(s) would not only get a new outfit at Christmas, but a new career too, and my sister received Barbie's Dream House (Swoon) from Santa one year. (yes ,as a single woman, Barbie owned significant real estate.) Barbie was representative of a changing world. From an early age my mother encouraged me to be or do , whatever I pleased unencumbered by traditional gender roles. Like Barbie my options were limitless, the husband optional and the future bright. Thanks Mum.
I would highly recommend spending some time with Barbie on Tiny Shoulders: Rethinking Barbie(Crave) I’d love to hear your thoughts.

There is a small recessed nook in my home that never really got finished when I renovated five years ago. I installed lighting intending to install glass shelves. Never happened. Finally I have found what I think to be the perfect use for it. My late Aunt left behind some really beautiful hats. Works of art really. I have hung a few of them in the nook. Just above my collection of September Issues of Vogue Magazine I think they will be happy there.

We had a surprise visit on the weekend from the young women behind those fabulous Noel & Co candles. Meet Janie and Lauren Noel, fresh from finishing their last high school exam in Kentville and weeks away from a trip to Greece that kicked off their candle making adventures several years ago. Recipients of the Top 30 under 30 Innovators by Atlantic Business Magazine (2022), Best New Business (2022) by the Annapolis Valley Chamber of Commerce and most recently were recognized with the National Young Philanthropist Award by the Kidney Foundation of Canada. A cause close to both of their hearts as Lauren has first hand knowledge of the good work being done by the Kidney Foundation. Two % of their proceeds is donated to the Atlantic Kidney Foundation.
Their visit was in part to bring a new product that they (and i) are excited about but you will have to wait just a little bit to find out what!!! Congratulations girls on all of your success! The future looks pretty, darn bright!!

The perfect little bag...

As some of you know, I am in the throws of cleaning out a large home belonging to my late Aunt. She was a collector…which sounds better than hoarder…
I’ve sorted through boxes and boxes (and boxes and boxes) of her correspondence reminding me of the days when I would anxiously wait for the mail to arrive. Those days when the mail held a lot of promise instead of just bills and junk mail. It could be down right exhilarating to pick up the mail, a postcard from a friend, a letter (and maybe some cash) from my Mum, or one from a boyfriend or even a boy friend. We all wrote to each other, and often.
A lot of good things came in the mail! I miss that. Like most, I rely on digital communication these days : Email, Text , Messenger, convenient and fast, yes, but lacking the intimacy of a hand written letter. A hand written letter requires one to sit still and gather thoughts before putting pen to paper exactly the opposite of a quick one line or one word response or very often just an acronym (Are you seriously laughing out??!!)
I’m going to do better and I’m going to kick off strong by using these beautiful, whimsical note cards by Bridgetown Artist ,Lisa Roos. You will find these cards at the shop at 21 Queen St., Bridgetown. You will also find Angela or myself in the shop every day this summer. Drop by, pick up some cards and re-boot your letter writing in style!
P.S. I didn’t read any of my Aunt’s letters, it felt too much like an invasion of her privacy. I have my own boxes to read.

What is so special about a Swedish Sponge? Well, it is an almost magical kitchen aid because it can take the place of all your dish cloths, sponges and paper towels and keep all surfaces clean and odour free.
* Super absorbent: absorbing up to 15 times its weight and is far more
hygienic than a traditional dish cloth or sponge
* One sponge can take the place of up to 17 rolls of paper towel (and paper towels
account for over 200 million tons of trash each year globally)
* Air dries quickly avoiding bacteria and odour ( traditional sponges trap moisture
and dirt creating a breeding ground for bacteria and that STINKS)
* Can be washed up to 200 times (top shelf of your dishwasher)
* Completely biodegradable and compostable
* and they are pretty too!
Designed in New Brunswick and made in Sweden. Available in an assortment of designs. $5.95. Available in store only.

I met Diane when we were neighbours at Cutten House, Acadia University. I hadn't seen her since 1980 when she sauntered into my shop in Bridgetown about a month ago. A great surprise, to say the least. Here she is at the Halifax waterfront wearing the recycled Sari Silk Top she picked up at Tallulah Freelove, before heading home to Calgary. Diane, just as cool as she was on the day we met, and that was pretty flipping cool.
Would love to see your photos - send them in!

Keeping cool and packing light! Thanks to Nathalie for sending pictures from her trip to Israel. Showing extreme versatility wearing the feather weight Kiera Kimono as a bathing suit coverup and as a light covering over the Sarah linen dress for evening. That is some smart packing and planning!

Today we said good bye and celebrated the long life of my dear Aunt Roberta, known to all as "Bertie". As I washed these tea cups (hers) in advance of meeting with family and friends, I was struck by their beauty: some delicate, some whimsical, some intricate, others bold in design and in colour, but all made of strong bone china. Not a bad metaphor for the woman herself. Each of these beauties would have been a special gift from a special friend. A tea cup collection of a lifetime. I have a new respect and a bit of a fascination for the tea cup, I may need to build a shelf.

I love this! Wishing all a great day!

We’ve lost an icon, an extraordinary entertainer and a role model. Thanks for the music Tina. Rest in Peace.
As shared by The Female Quotient: “Simply the best. , a true icon known for her powerful voice and magnetic stage presence, has passed away at the age of 83.
After suffering physical, emotional and financial abuse for decades, Tina became a superstar on her own in her 40s, at a time when most of her peers were disappearing from the spotlight, becoming a top concert draw for years. Throughout her career, she earned eight Grammy Awards and a star on the Walk of Fame. Not to mention, she is one of the best-selling recording artists of all time. Crowned the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Tina’s journey is a testament to the power of determination and resilience.
Join us in celebrating the life and legacy of this extraordinary woman who proved that strength knows no bounds!”
