It’s Tracheostomy Awareness Week, and I want to take a moment to share a part of Frankie’s journey.

Frankie has a tracheostomy — a small medical device that helps him breathe — but his story is so much more than a tube.

Frankie is 25 years old and lives with complex medical needs, including epilepsy, severe scoliosis, respiratory issues, and a rare condition called ATRX Syndrome. His trach isn’t a choice — it’s a necessity that helps keep him alive when his lungs struggle to do the job on their own. Deep suctioning, frequent pneumonia, and chronic lung collapse are part of our everyday reality.

Right now, Frankie is living at Grace Hospital, not because he wants to be there, but because the care he needs — including deep suctioning and trained support — isn’t allowed to happen in his home under current government policies. This week is especially emotional, as we fight for his right to live in the community, surrounded by caregivers who love him and know his needs — not in a hospital bed.

A trach doesn’t define Frankie. He’s funny, expressive, stubborn, and full of life. He deserves to ride in a car again, attend his day program again, feel the sun on his face outside of hospital walls again.

Tracheostomy care is care — not a barrier to inclusion. It’s time the system makes space for people like Frankie.

This week, please take a moment to learn, to share, and to advocate. For Frankie. For every person with a trach who deserves to live a full, supported life.

At UniqueC, everything we do is about supporting the incredible warriors and families who face medical challenges every day. Today, I’m opening my heart to share something very personal—our own journey with my son, Frankie.
Frankie is a true fighter, but right now, we’re facing some overwhelming medical and financial challenges. Our dear friend Janet has started a GoFundMe to help us navigate this difficult time.
