TLDR: Canada wide flat rate shipping prices will be increasing to $20 beginning February 1st. Orders over $300 will now qualify for free shipping. USA flat rate shipping will remain at $25.

In August of 2022 small business owners received a notification from Canada Post that they were introducing new pricing for parcel services and surcharges beginning in September of 2022.
I can only speak for my business but these price increases have taken a real toll. I have been offering $15 flat rate shipping since opening The Standby List in August of 2021. Truth be told, that was a guess at what my average shipping cost might be. I ship items that vary drastically in size, and I wanted to make sure my customers could know what to expect when it came time to check out.
I’m in Ontario but based on my location I don’t have access to cheaper shipping options (for example Chit Chats or similar businesses). Shipping a small parcel, say a sweater or a pair of breeches, to BC costs about $30. As I work off a low consignment percentage, there have been plenty of orders where I’ve actually spent more in shipping than I’ve made in commission.
Funny enough, Canada post offers flat rate boxes, with the smallest option coming in around $20. The issue with these flat rate boxes is their sizing sucks. I want customers to receive their items packaged nicely, not crammed into a standard size box (and potentially warping things like half pads or leather goods). I’ve tried to utilize these flat rate boxes when it makes sense, but it’s not my favourite option.
All this to say, I’ve made the tough decision to increase the Canada wide flat rate shipping price to $20.
