Disbelief, Fear, Panic, Generosity, Community
The door clicked shut. The decision was made, burn or not I needed to leave everything behind. I had my purse, wallet, briefcase with computer and notebooks. Toiletry bag.
We had just spent the last hour making sure all of the Newport Beach Tenants had found their way off the property. The fire was to the south at the edge of our land and it was time to go, 4pm, Saturday, August 1, 2026.
That day, the material goods from 45 years of my life with Steve burnt. 80 homes and RV’s, the Business Office, Gardens, Greenhouse, Yoga Centre, Woodworking Shop, Mechanic Shop, Marina. Gone in a few hours.

“Worst Days of My Life”—Juliet Logan
These are just a few of the feeling words that the people from Newport Beach and Logan’s Landing exclaimed to me when I asked for three words following the fire and evacuation. This kind of experience is powerful and life changing and not to be taken lightly, not only for the losses that have been realized but for the life changing opportunity that it is.
The day following the fire I returned to Newport Beach by boat with the Kletke Family, Dave, Kymm and my brother Arnie. On the way over, the wind and waves were strong. As we got closer things calmed and we docked at Rob and Deb’s. We scrambled off the boat and looked around. Everything had been touched by fire, all the homes were gone.
