"IF YOU BUILD A PLACE PEOPLE WANT TO VISIT, YOU BUILD A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE WANT TO LIVE" —Maura Gast

✅Almost all small towns are hoping to attract industry. And pretty much all of them are failing. Primarily they struggle due to lack of skilled labour, inadequate infrastructure, and limited amenities. Subsequently, they lose out to better prepared urban areas both in
Canada and internationally. Amherstburg’s luck has been no different, and the recent decision by Diageo proves that even existing industry is vulnerable.

✅Because of that, a fiscally healthy Amherstburg absolutely needs tourism. It’s vital for economic growth, cultural exchange, and personal growth. Thankfully, the town has a beautiful river setting, heritage buildings, and a growing arts’ scene. But to be competitive, tourists need to know about the town and what interesting things are going on each weekend to help them decide whether they should visit. Amherstburg’s Tourism department has created some award-winning events like Open Air weekends, the Uncommon Festival, and River Lights, just to name a few, that really resonate with visitors AND residents.
✅However, Tourism’s budget for events and advertising is small, which makes it very difficult to get the town’s message out through all the advertising clutter. On top of that, their marketing budget has been essentially the same for the past three years. Inflation during that time period has been around 10%, so real tourism spending has actually declined. Recognizing the link between Tourism and Economic Development, the two departments were recently combined. But if the combined department doesn’t receive more funds to promote tourism, it’s a very hollow move.
✅Amherstburg is beautifully positioned to be a leading tourism town, but it needs to invest for success. Open Air is an award-winning Ontario best practice, but due to lack of funds it has too many quiet weekends. This causes some to challenge its importance, often using phoney “research” that is only anecdotal and biased. So before you go to vote on October 26th, ask the candidates, Where do you stand on investing in tourism?
✅WHAT MAKES AMHERSTBURG GREAT

We are a big believer in public spaces and public gatherings, so we are delighted that Amherstburg’s Open Air is starting up again this Friday. It activates our downtown every weekend until September 6th. Visit the town's website here for up-to-date details of all the exciting things going on. See you there!

WHAT MAKES AMHERSTBURG GREAT👇
✅MEALS ON WHEELS

Amherstburg Community Services provides home delivery of healthy meals in Amherstburg, Harrow, and LaSalle. These meals are very important for older adults living independently in their own homes with no one to cook for them, or for persons of any age recovering from illness or surgery. Led by their excellent Executive Director Kathy DiBartolomeo (Kat) and her team of 10, they also offer much more than food delivery:

a food pantry
numerous senior activities
transportation for seniors
and opportunities for our community

It’s also very smart that they are located in The Hub at 320 Richmond along with other non-profit agencies like The House Youth Centre, Essex County Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic, Fighting Island Boxing Club, and the Verdi Club.

Over the years, people (sadly even some on council) have criticized the investment in The Hub, which is both misguided and disappointing. Small towns like Amherstburg need safe, inviting places for its citizens to gather. All of The Hub tenants definitely contribute to making Amherstburg great. Another important community investment is the Libro Centre, which we will shine a light on in our August 19 post.

Like with The House Youth Centre and the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission, we are donating $1000 to ACS. You too can contribute to this very necessary service by calling 519-736-5471. You probably know a senior who is struggling to get around, and you can help improve their lifestyle.

Listen to CKBG this coming Saturday and Sunday at 8AM to hear an interview with Executive Director Kathy DiBartolomeo.

"THE RIVER I STEP IN IS NOT THE RIVER I STAND IN"
—Greek Philosopher Heraclitus

The philosopher’s quote above highlights the nature of constant change. Moving at approximately 4 mph, the Detroit River ("Rivière du Detroit" or River of the Strait) is constantly changing. Due to the
river, Amherstburg has always been connected to the world beyond it—through, trade, migration, struggle, and progress.

The river has changed for the better and Amherstburg has changed with it. Due to our place by the river, our area was once a gathering place for diverse Indigenous nations, a battle ground during the War of 1812, Rum Running in the 1920s, and Boblo Boats for 100 years until 1992. Today, Amherstburg is a river town that gathers visitors far and wide to enjoy its heritage downtown, arts scene, and many new unique retail shops.

Check out the park’s beautiful "Our River - Our Home" mural by Dennis White that captures the natural and cultural heritage of the river.

Having our town located right beside a heritage river definitely helps make Amherstburg great! It sets us apart from most of the other small towns of Ontario. And with the new Gordie Howe Bridge only 19 km from Amherstburg, we will soon be welcoming a lot more American friends.

If you wish to learn a great deal more about the Detroit River, pick up a copy of A River Runs Between Us. This book is a work of love by Chris Edwards and Elaine Weeks that they started back in 2018. Today it’s a 382-page book full of very interesting (and often forgotten) stories and timeless photos.

And if you want to enjoy a beautifully written book with over fifty colourful photos of Amherstburg, be sure to also pick up Marty Gervais’s new book Amherstburg: Picture A River Town at River Bookshop. CKBG is currently running a contest to give you a chance to win one of these impressive books.
