Thinking about reseeding your lawn? Late summer or early fall is recommended for fewer w**d competition and a good 6 - 8 weeks to grow strong roots before winter frost. We have everything you need from soil and amendments to seed and fertilizer. See our step-by-step checklist below for helpful tips and tricks!
Soil/Area Prep:
Mow low to about 1-1.5in. Remove clippings and debris to expose the soil. Rake hard to remove dead grass buildup. Aerate as needed if your soil is hard or compacted. Spread ~1/4in of high-quality turf loam or compost over bare spots, using the flat side of a rake to level it out. Use a phosphorus-rich starter fertilizer to boost root growth.
Seeding:
Use a broadcast spreader for large areas or shake by hand for small patches in a criss-cross pattern (north to south, then east to west). Lightly rake the seeds into the topsoil (no deeper than 1/4 in) or roll the area so the seeds firmly touch the soil.
Watering & Care (First 3 Weeks):
Mist the lawn 2 -3/day for 5-10min to keep the top layer damp, avoiding puddles. Keep off the re-seeded areas completely until the grass grows. Reduce watering to 1x/day (but deeper) once the sprouts reach 1 in tall.
First Mow & Maintenance:
Let the new grass grow to ~ 3.5 in before its first cut, adjusting the mower blade to
2.5-3in so as not to stress young roots. Keep an eye on municipal water restrictions to ensure your schedule aligns with local bylaws.
