Happy International Day of Women in Beekeeping!
Well the bee jacket officially doesn’t fit anymore 😂. Got into the hives last weekend on our maybe last warmish day of the season to pull out feeders and Apivar strips. Still need to box the ladies up for winter but wont be really opening the hives again until spring! Sad to say goodbye to the bees for now but the timing is good as we will have our hands full with our newest family member soon 🥰
Day 29 - Shoutout to Your Helpers
Shoutout to these incredible ladies who step up for me any time I need a hand. Whether its an extra hand in the hives, extracting day or watching my kid so I can work uninterrupted, I couldn’t do this without them. Photo from our “Girls Day” where I recruited all of them to come help me feed my bees.
Day 12 - Favourite Learning Resources
People! Experienced beekeepers are the best resources. Im not much for reading, and i find looking stuff up online to be overwhelming with the amount of information available, so I love the information puts out daily as part of her hive membership. I have learned SO MUCH in the past year just watching her stories and she is always so quick to respond when I send questions in.
Big shoutout to Mike and Judy Campbell at for being our beekeeping mentors. Mike and Judy taught our beginner beekeeping course which really spiked our love of bees and have been so supportive and encouraging as we started our beekeeping journey. They have continued to be an incredible resource over the years whenever we have questions and they make the most delicious mead its always worth a visit to their store for a chat and a treat 😜
Photo is a throwback to our very first hive inspection ever when we were little beek babies ☺️.
Day 4- Your Best Bee Picture
Its so hard to just pic one, but I love this picture. I usually am in a hurry when im in my hives and dont pull my camera out often, but one day id love to spend more time on bee photography 🥰
Day 3- Favourite, Underrated and Overrated piece of Equipment
Favourite- standard hive tool. I use it for literally everything. Prying, scraping, lifting, you name it! Not much more to say haha.
Underrated - nuc box! Just this year I started using a pro nuc box during my hive inspections and boy oh boy is it handy to be able to pop frames out and store them in there as needed. And more recently ive been pulling my frame feeders from the hive into the nuc box to fill, and then dropping them back into the hive rather than trying to lift my heavy bucket of syrup high enough to fill the feeder in the hive.
Overrated - Gloves 🤷♀️. I wore gloves my first 3 hive inspections ever and then ditched them in favour of being able to grip the frames better and feel when i might squish bees. The exception is when I’m using a mite treatment that requires gloves! Occasionally my hives get a little spicy that i have considered buying a leather pair but it hasn’t happened yet!
Day 2 - Your Favourite Hive
My favourite hive is this beauty we refer to as 5A. We got this hive as a nuc we purchased 3 years ago and have made many splits off of it, all of which have gone on to be strong hives. 3/4 of our current apiary came from this hive! This hive is quite gentle and has also been our biggest honey producer 2 years in a row ☺️
Hello! To kick off 31 days of bees, let me introduce myself! Im Maegan, and I run Big House Honeys with my husband Don. We have been beekeeping for 4 years now and have so, so much left to learn.
I work full time with the Ministry of Forests, run our small business and am a mom to a wonderful toddler with another addition to the family on the way in about 6 weeks 🥰
I love gardening and working with my bees, but can also be found spending my free time adventuring outdoors either fishing, hunting or backpacking with my toddler in tow.
Im highly guilty of taking on too many projects at a time and stressing myself out, so am looking forward to my year of maternity leave and taking on too many projects with a newborn on my back 😂

Back at the candle making! 🥰
Its been a hectic couple months, but we are settled into our new home, complete with a dedicated space for candle making! Finally unpacked all my gear and have started stocking up our inventory to prep for a couple late summer markets.
Whats your favourite item to buy at your local farmers market?
Today was a rare occasion where Don and I were both off work and child-free for the day! It was our 5 year anniversary yesterday so the kid went to spend the weekend with her aunty. Took the opportunity to work the bee yard together without our usual rush 🥰
Playing with the thermal camera today. So neat!
