Today is recognized as World Rainforest Day as a reminder to protect our rainforest worldwide. Together we are to “Conserve, Restore, and Regenerate”. The celebration is held annually worldwide on June 22nd to raise awareness of the important role the rainforest plays. The rainforest are often called the lungs of the planet, so the goal is to promote efforts in protecting and conserving them. It provides an opportunity for people to learn about the threats facing rainforests, such as deforestation, illegal logging, habitat destruction, animal agriculture etc. Our daily diet choices can have an impact on the survival of the rainforests. A number of studies show that choosing a plant-based diet can help to decrease deforestation. To preserve maximum species diversity, we must shift from animal-based agriculture to plant-based agriculture. Already 56 million acres of land are used to feed farmed animals, while only 4 million acres produce plants for human consumption. It takes 20 times less land to feed someone on a plant based diet than it does to feed those that consume animals.Deforestation through farming also has a major effect on species, while remaining areas of undisturbed and recovering forest provide the last refuge for many species unable to withstand the impact of human activity.Rainforests are Earth’s oldest living ecosystems with green canopies that has been in existence and surviving for at least 70 million years. Forests cover around one third of the Earth’s land mass and are the most biologically diverse ecosystems on land, home to over 80% of animals, plants and insects. Each plant or animal species, no matter how small, has an important role to play, and maintaining biodiversity boosts ecosystem productivity. For example, a large number of plant species enables a greater range of crops, which helps to ensure food security.
Rainforest incredible biodiverse ecosystems provide numerous ecological benefits, including regulating the climate, supporting a wide variety of plant and animal species, and supplying essential resources.
Teamwork is necessary throughout the world to ensure its viability for future generations.
