I wear check prints because they let me express my fun and quirky side.

The playful pattern dates back to chaturanga, the 6th century Indian mother of modern chess.

For centuries, colorful, contrasting squares have branded everything from tiles and tribes to game boards and musical movements like Ska.

Checks are a trendy motif for household patterns. I didn’t want to look like a tablecloth, so I grounded these checkered pants with a crisp, asymmetrical, cropped white button down.

I'm talking about you, and also the colour orange!

Try pairing orange with green, a palette found in nature. Think marigolds on a stem, or butternut squash just off the vine.

I wanted this orange suit to pop a little more. The mesh top in pale green balances punchy orange. The asymmetrical cut becomes a figure hugging focal point, adding curvy dimension.

There’s one more design trick at play here: repetition. The green and orange of the jacket and top have similar colour weight. A richer orange trouser glows against the deeper green bag. It’s an overall ripple of complementary tones.

For intimate dinners and holiday fetes, there’s nothing like the effortless elegance of houndstooth.

Coco Chanel popularized the print that takes its graphic vitality from geometric tessellation, or tiling. The British Royals have developed iconic looks around houndstooth, giving the pattern a certain timeless luxury.

Pedigree aside, a houndstooth blazer or skirt is one of the easiest ways to style a dramatic black dinner outfit. Try it, and thank me later!

That means a new year is just around the corner, and the festive season invites us to try something new.

So while you’re making new goals, go for a new print, pattern, or look you’ve been considering. Definitely use the holidays to be a bit more daring.

Remember those disastrous culottes? I would *never* wear them again...but at least I tried!
