CARICOM Chairman Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre reminds us, Emancipation Day is not only a time to remember the past—it is a call to continue building a future rooted in justice, opportunity, unity, and prosperity for all Caribbean people.

Freedom was hard won. Our responsibility is to protect it, strengthen it, and ensure its promise reaches future generations.

I'll admit... my heart skipped a beat 😅 when I saw the police walk into Black Food Bookstore & Culture Shop! 🚔

Thankfully, there was no cause for concern. They were simply stopping by as part of their community policing initiative to visit local businesses and connect with the community. 🤝🏾

It was a pleasant surprise and a reminder that positive relationships are built one conversation at a time.

Thank you to the officers for taking the time to stop by and engage with the community.

Emancipation Day | August 1

Long before the transatlantic slave trade, Africa was home to great civilizations that shaped the world through learning, innovation, commerce, governance, and culture. We descend from people of achievement, resilience, and vision. That history belongs to us, and it must never be forgotten.

In fact, the long struggle for our freedom began from day one when our ancestors resisted enslavement and refused to surrender their identity. Their courage ensured that future generations would inherit not only freedom, but a legacy worth preserving.

As we honour Emancipation Day today, let us recommit ourselves to knowing our history, protecting our culture, supporting one another, and strengthening our connections across The Bahamas, the Caribbean, the African diaspora, and the African continent.

Emancipation Day is more than a commemoration. It is a call to educate ourselves, build our institutions, strengthen our communities, and shape our own future.

That is how we honour our ancestors. That is how we honour ourselves.

Happy Emancipation Day.

🏅 A Century of Regional Excellence Begins

The XXV Central American and Caribbean Games are officially underway in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, commemorating 100 years since the inaugural Games in 1926. From July 24 to August 8, more than 6,000 athletes from 37 nations and territories will come together in a celebration of sport, culture, and regional unity under the theme, "100 Years of Unity, One Region, One Heart."

As the oldest multi-sport event uniting Central America and the Caribbean, the Games reflect the shared history, resilience, and extraordinary talent that connect our nations. They are a powerful reminder that while we compete on the field of play, we are united by a common spirit.

🇧🇸 We'll be cheering on Team Bahamas as they join athletes from across Central America and the Caribbean in celebrating a century of sporting excellence. Best of luck to all our athletes!

A new Smithsonian exhibition, ¡Taíno Vive! (Taíno Lives), explores the enduring legacy of the Taíno through art, archaeology, and cultural traditions. Challenging the long-held myth of extinction, the exhibition affirms that Taíno identity and heritage continue to thrive across the Caribbean and its diaspora.

A timely reminder that history is not only remembered—it endures.
