My story
A gavox made for navy Pilots
My project to create a custom watch for the U.S. Navy’s VAQ-139 squadron was an incredible journey, both technically and creatively. It all started when I was approached by a team of pilots who fly the EA-18G Growler, a state-of-the-art electronic warfare aircraft designed to neutralize enemy radar systems and clear the way for the rest of the air forces.
In January 2023, Mathieu contacted me with the idea of designing a special watch for his squadron. Since I had already designed watches for EURORSA, I decided to propose an automatic GMT watch. This was perfect for these pilots, who frequently travel across the world. The watch also featured an innovative detail: the mobile triangle, which I’ve included in my Aviator Diver watches, along with a metal bracelet featuring a diver’s extension clasp. Altogether, this made for a true tool watch, designed for performance and function.
What made this project truly unique was the high degree of customization. I opted for a sandwich dial, and at 6 o’clock, I included the Cougar emblem—the mascot of the VAQ-139 squadron. Mathieu also suggested an interesting idea: adding an index at 1 o’clock, creating symmetry between the 3 and 9, symbolizing the VAQ-139 name. It was a brilliant idea that added a special touch to the watch.
One of the aspects I love most about creating watches for pilots is the opportunity to deliver them in person. So far, I’ve completed nearly 50 custom projects, and whenever possible, I make the effort to meet my clients face-to-face. For a passionate aviation enthusiast like me, it’s an amazing experience to visit so many squadrons. When I delivered these watches, I traveled to Whidbey Island, where the VAQ-139 squadron is based. Their operations are often launched from the USS Nimitz, and I got to see firsthand the incredible world these pilots live in. It was an unforgettable experience.
This project exemplifies what Gavox is all about: combining technical innovation, customized design, and close relationships with my clients. The watch I created for the VAQ-139 reflects history, passion, and expertise in watchmaking, all tailored to the needs of these U.S. Navy pilots.
