It was a very special moment when we handed-over one of our first chocolate 🍫 bars made in Uganda to John Yvan (73), the oldest cocoa farmer πŸ‘¨πŸΏβ€πŸŒΎ in Uganda πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬. We were very happy that we could realise his dream: making his own chocolate!

50 years ago he started his cocoa plantation 🌱, by now his plantation reaches 6,000 trees. Back then the government was encouraging farmers to diversify into production of cash crops other than cotton and coffee. He learned many farmers πŸ‘¨πŸΏβ€πŸŒΎ πŸ‘¨πŸΏβ€πŸŒΎ πŸ‘¨πŸΏβ€πŸŒΎ the skills to grow cocoa plantation. With the money he earned from the cocoa, he was able to send his children to university.

Our chocolate 🍫 is produced by our cocoa farmers in small batches and sourced from small farms around our artisanal chocolate factory in Uganda πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬ . This allows us to follow the process from the cocoa tree 🌱 to the chocolate bar, all within the community and in support of sustainable farming practices, honoring the tradition of the chocolate making process with grace and integrity.

Our second cocoa plantation is located in Mount Elgon in East Uganda πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬. The highly fertile volcanic mountain β›° gives the perfect soil and climate for cocoa to grow. The 100 cocoa trees 🌱 that we planted in 2017 are very well maintained by Peter Mukono, one of our cocoa farmers, and his wife. This plantation gives us direct access to 3,000 cocoa trees and indirect access to 6,000 cocoa farmers.

Throwback to last week. We organised a chocolate workshop in Uganda πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬ for the cocoa farmers. We trained 20 farmers, of which 50% women and 50% men, to make their very own chocolate! We learned them all the steps from roasting and grinding the cocoa beans to the conching the chocolate. The final step was the tempering and molding of the chocolate 🍫.

At the end they could enjoy their very own chocolate 🍫 and a hot chocolate drink!!! πŸ˜‹

🍫Making chocolate in the middle of the rainforest of Costa Rica πŸ‡¨πŸ‡·! Jorge Salazar and his sister Mariana gave us a tour at their family cocoa plantation of 3 generations. It is very impressive to see how they started making chocolate from tree to bar and created La Iguana Chocolate. We tasted the ancient chocolate drink from the indigenous. We created some truly unique truffles and chocolate bars from 100% their cocoa beans and chocolate. Their mother treated us with the best homemade chocolate brownie I ever tasted! A very similar story as Lake Victoria Chocolate...
