MY DEAREST SISTER…
This is a question that touches the heart of understanding: Adam and Iblis both disobeyed Allah, yet their stories could not be more different.
Adam ﷺ was created, given knowledge, and honored by Allah. When he ate from the forbidden tree, it was a slip — a test. He immediately turned to Allah in repentance, humility, and remorse. And Allah, Most Merciful, accepted his dua:
“Then Adam received from his Lord words, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful.”
(Al-Baqarah 2:37)
Iblis, on the other hand, disobeyed out of arrogance. He refused to bow, saying: “I am better than him.” His heart hardened, and he chose pride over humility, defiance over submission. Allah warned him, but he persisted in rebellion. His disobedience became permanent because he never sought forgiveness.
The difference, my sister, lies in the heart’s return to Allah:
Adam’s sin was temporary because he repented. His humility saved him.
Iblis’s sin was eternal because arrogance blinded him, and he refused to return.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“All the children of Adam sin, and the best of the sinners are those who repent.”
(Tirmidhi)
SubḥānAllāh — we are human. We stumble. We make mistakes. But the door to Allah’s mercy is always open. Arrogance closes it; humility opens it.
So whenever you feel weighed down by your mistakes, remember Adam ﷺ. Turn back to Allah sincerely. Repent with your whole heart. And trust in His mercy — because it is limitless.
And when you feel pride creeping in, beware. That is the path of Iblis. Don’t let it stay. Keep your heart soft, your tongue humble, and your eyes seeking Allah’s forgiveness.
This is the difference, my sister: one fell and rose, the other fell and stayed down.
