A Man Called ‘Peace’:
The Story of Eric Hassell and his Shipping Enterprise
by Henderson Carter
Dr. Henderson Carter, Senior Lecturer in History at the UWI Cave Hill Campus, artfully weaves an intimate, yet intricate tapestry of the maritime interconnections between Saba and Barbados. Central to this tapestry is the son of Capt. Frank Hassell, Eric Alphonzo, who left primary school at age 11 to pursue the life of a ship hand on his father’s boat. Eric would later become captain of his own boat, “The Zipper”, plying the Caribbean Sea. Eric’s perseverance to make a man of himself, to raise and educate his family of eight children propelled him to later open a one-door shipping business in Bridgetown which has since become an unenviable shipping enterprise now managed by his grand-daughter, Erica Luke.
In simple, yet fluid language, old and modern images of Saba and Barbados are juxtaposed with brilliant text charting the evolution of a business. Dr. Carter’s treatment of the main subject, his extreme patience in digging deep to unearth the fibre of the Hassell clan is extraordinarily depicted, reflecting the love of family and the legacy passed to future generations.

Kenzie's Farm Adventures
Written by Kenzie’s Mom
Illustrated by Nazia Obaid
Kenzie's Farm Adventures follows 1 year old Kenzie Gibson around her family farm, as she learns new words and animals. From as little as 1 month old, Kenzie enjoyed story time. It was one of the ways she bonded with her Mom, who made a promise to Kenzie to write stories of her own.
Unfortunately, in August of 2021, Kenzie passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. She never got to read her books. Her mom decided that she would see the vision through, but instead of using fictional characters, she would base the stories on Kenzie's life, her way of memorializing and celebrating her precious daughter.

Here is Gail Jewel Hunte the author of Gracie and the Green Monkey interacting with one of Barbados' Green Monkeys. She wrote this children's book to draw attention to animal welfare particular the green monkeys in Barbados. Gail has a charity that plants fruit trees in the gullies to help reduce the conflict between farmers and monkeys. She visited the Barbados Wild Lift Reserve in Barbados to share her book with us and her love of the monkeys. The green monkeys (Chlorocebus sabaeus) found in Barbados originally came from Senegal and the Gambia in West Africa approximately 350 years ago.
