Welcome to our little bushland apiary, the yummiest pure mixed blossom honey, for that real unprocessed non heat treated cold extracted raw honey and honey products. Each batch of honey is collected and extracted with no heating or warming of the honey it is spun using centrifugal force then gravity filtered though mesh to remove any large pieces of wax or pollen and then bottled. Our honey may co

ntain traces of pollen, bees wax and propolis and as its not commercial processed it will retain all of its natural vitamins and beneficial enzymes. Also as its Raw and not commercially processed it will start to crystallise after a while, the time this takes depends on the type of nectar the bees have collected, this does not mean that your honey has gone off, its a natural process. The sugars from nectar are naturally crystalline and after a certain amount of time the sugars naturally return to their crystalline form. honey in this state is great for spreading on toast and for cooking as its less messy. :)

Happy new year everyone. Sad news to report, The Varroa Destructor has arrived at our apiary. This is a parasite of the honeybee that is new to Australia that landed in Newcastle in 2023 at the sentinel hives at the port and has just got to us here in Queensland.
Just before Christmas we were doing our hive inspections and mite testing and unfortunately came across 4 of hives with the mite. We have been expecting it for a while now.Bee keeping will not be same. The varroa mite can decimate a hive in a matter of weeks if not treated and managed properly which takes up so much time and effort. Currently we have 92 hives and expect to loose more than half in the coming months just because we can’t get to all of them in time as varroa moves rapidly. 🐝

Hi everybody

The ABA ( Amateur Beekeepers Australia ) has started a petition asking Parliament to introduce an Own Use Exemption (as in New Zealand) so beekeepers can legally use certain non-synthetic treatments on their own hive

Can everybody please sign Petition EN7508 - Legalise Organic Varroa Treatments to Save the Bees and Beekeepers. It will only take a couple of minutes

Petition Reason

Varroa destructor is the most significant global threat to honey bees, and its recent spread into Australia has devastated bee populations and disrupted agricultural pollination. Australian law currently prohibits beekeepers from using any treatment that is not formally registered or permitted by the Australian Pesticide and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA), even if the treatment is widely used and proven safe and effective overseas. We seek a legislative amendment to allow registered beekeepers to use safe, non-synthetic treatments—such as oxalic acid, formic acid and thymol—on their own hives under an “Own Use Exemption” clause, similar to that adopted inNew Zealand. This exemption would not allow sale or supply to others, but would permit individual beekeepers to make and apply these treatments responsibly to protect their colonies. There is also a growing body of recent scientific research demonstrating that more effective doses and application methods are possible than those listed on currently approved product labels. However, under current law, these improved methods cannot legally be used by Australian beekeepers, despite their success internationally. Allowing an Own Use Exemption would support sustainable beekeeping, reduce reliance on synthetic chemicals, and enhance the resilience ofAustralia’s food systems.

Petition Request

We therefore ask the House to amend legislation governing agricultural and veterinary chemical use to introduce an "Own Use Exemption" clause, allowing beekeepers to legally use certain non-synthetic (organic) treatments—such as oxalic acid, formic acid and thymol—for controlling Varroa mite in their own hives

Varroa mite checks, a method we have to perform on every hive to see if the mite is present. Drone bee uncapping is the most positive method to locate them. They live and reproduce in drone and worker bee cells. All bee keepers in qld now should be checking for Varroa. We are still mite free, for how long is the million dollar question.
