Multiculturalism splashes colour on the Aussie canvas. I can't imagine that canvas being blank!
Today marks the Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated in Hong Kong and many cities across China and around the world. Do you know the Australian National Team won many International Dragon Boat Races. Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi! Here in Chatswood, one of Sydney's wonderfully multicultural communities, celebrations will continue tomorrow.
A few fun facts about the Dragon Boat Festival:
Dragon boat races have their roots in ancient traditions and folklore.
Families prepare and enjoy delicious rice dumplings (zongzi), a festival favourite.
In some regions, people believe that touching or splashing water from the river where the races are held brings good fortune and blessings for the year ahead.
But perhaps the greatest gift of these traditional festivals is much simpler.
They give people a wonderful excuse to gather, enjoy the outdoors, breathe some fresh air, share food, laugh, and create memories together. In other words, these festivals are classic examples of social connection.
Ironically, in modern society, we often wait for health professionals to prescribe community activities to improve our social determinants of health. Yet for centuries, cultures around the world have been creating these opportunities naturally through festivals, traditions and shared celebrations.
Food for thought.
Perhaps our ancestors understood something that modern medicine is only beginning to rediscover:
Human beings heal and flourish in community.

Let's celebrate multiculturalism the SOCCEROOs way!

Australia is still buzzing with excitement following the Socceroos' 2-0 win against Türkiye yesterday. Among them, the team's friends and family — and others who played a part in their World Cup journey.

Bibi put on her Laughter Yoga Buddy hat on and pondered upon some controversial ideas from an Aussie Senator. Here is Bibi's reflection:

"I listened to Pauline Hanson's speech at the National Press Club today and was intrigued by her call for Australia to become "monocultural".
Perhaps someone could help me understand what "monocultural" actually means. Is there any country on Planet Earth that is truly monocultural?
From my studies in acculturation, cultural exchange works both ways. When people from different backgrounds live side by side, newcomers adapt to the host country, but the host society also adopts ideas, foods and practices from the new residents.

Back in 2000, a newspaper survey reported that around 30% of Queensland households owned a Chinese cooking utensil — the humble wok. Fast forward to 2026, and I suspect that number would be much higher. Many Australian households probably have a flat-bottomed wok sitting somewhere in the kitchen cupboard.

Which brings me to a light-hearted question: do you think Pauline owns a wok in her kitchen?

If so, that little piece of cookware is a reminder that cultures naturally influence one another. That is not a threat — it is simply how societies evolve.

Perhaps Australia's strength has never been about becoming "monocultural", but about building a shared national identity while embracing the many cultural threads that have become part of everyday Australian life."

Bibi is very thankful for receiving $500 community donation from CBA Neutral Bank Branch. She consulted CFS' Youth Action Group on how best to use this sum. The top idea is to host a youth-focused 'X'mas Wreath Workshop' to celebrate a festive season and 'petal-it-forward' to spread kindness and joy! CFS is committed to co-design and co-create with our members. Andrew Gebert will be co-facilitating with me Thanks to Michelle Barry for suggesting a similar workshop earlier. SECNA Christina Chun
