Getting Started in Paddling - Buying a Second-hand paddle craft: kayak, canoe, SUP, raft and boards

New kayaks and canoes are getting very expensive! The cost of importing - shipping, duty and taxes, the cost of materials and labour, cost of commercial/retail space and staff costs (especially weekends when most want to go paddling). If you are buying a kayak that is coming from overseas, what happens if it arrives damaged? Importers should carry (very expensive) insurance policies to deal with these circumstances. Kayak shops are disappearing as the cost of living increases.

Secondhand is a great option that really should be considered!

Why would you buy a new kayak? - it takes time to find the right kayak - it might not be perfect but I am yet to find the perfect craft and I personally have at least 15 craft! They all do something different, depending on who, what, where.

Kayak fishing is one of the biggest growing kayaking discipline. While it is fun and exhilarating catching your fish, there's a strong need to learn the safety aspects before heading out to fish from your sit-on-top kayak.

Amazing

It’s raining rainbows again today, this time at Blue Rock Lake (15,000) and Lake Wendouree (10,000).

It’s going to be a huge year of fish stocking as we strive to release a record 10 million fish by April.

Winter is all about releasing trout and when the weather warms up before Christmas we’ll transition to native fish, beginning with estuary perch and Aussie bass with cod and yellas to follow.

Stay tuned for the ride cos it’s gonna be spectacular!

After nearly 5 years, the Lake Tyers entrance is open again!

Recent significant rainfall across Gippsland has seen water levels rise in Lake Tyers to the magical 2.3m mark, resulting in the natural opening of the sandbar separating the lake and the beach. The last time this happened was when the water levels rose in July 2016 by 136cm!

Strong currents and wave action (which hit the entrance at an oblique angle) lead to large volumes of sand being deposited, causing the closure. Lake Tyers has a small catchment area, so it takes a LOT of rain for the water levels to rise enough to create an opening.

The opening is a significant event, both culturally and environmentally, to the land’s Traditional Owners, the Gunaikurnai People. When water levels drop to sea level, an exchange between fresh and salt water occurs, flushing out and refreshing the system. As a result, we can anticipate a natural restocking of species such snapper, leather jacket and salmon in the coming months!

To learn more and watch footage of the opening, check out this article from ABC Gippsland: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-06-24/lake-tyers-opens-naturally/100239556
