It’s disappointing.
It’s disheartening.
And it’s infuriating.
And many others would feel the same way, knowing this has happened …
The dance circle out on the Town Common has been damaged.
The tarp was thrown into the river and cars have driven through the sand.
This is a sacred space, created for our community, for dance, ceremony, and connection. It’s also where our kids dance barefoot, which means safety is everything.
Every week we run the Wiradjuri Wagambirra program out here. We’ve already put in the hours, doing the hard yards, clearing dead trees, overgrown grass, cleaning up rubbish, picking up glass and needles to make this a safe space for our kids and for our people. And we continue to do this every couple of days, even while juggling work, home, caring for kids and family, running programs, delivering workshops, and coming straight out of our NAIDOC week.
This program hasn’t come with any funding or pay, it’s just us dedicating our time, volunteering to make sure this space is safe, cultural, and alive for community. That’s why it hurts so much to see it vandalised. When people do things like this, it ruins it for everyone.
If this was an accident, we ask you to come forward. If you know something please speak up. If it was deliberate, know that we are taking steps to protect this space moving forward.
This hurts, but it won’t stop us. We will keep rebuilding, because culture is stronger than disrespect.
