Aboriginal Contemporary

Aboriginal Contemporary Affordable, authentic, Aboriginal Art Our gallery opened its doors almost ten years ago in Bronte, in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.

Today, Aboriginal Contemporary has an enviable reputation for quality, service and ethical trading; not just with our customers but with the art centres from whom we source our work. This is in no small part due to owner Nichola Dare’s regular trips to some of the most remote parts of Australia and her ability to build relationships with art centres and artists, based on mutual trust and respect.

Nichola’s time in Australia’s Western Desert, The Kimberley, APY Lands and Arnhem Land has also given her a deep understanding of the country and culture at the heart of the art we sell. These unique relationships mean our gallery can often source artwork otherwise unavailable to private buyers; coupled with Nichola’s exquisite eye, they have made Aboriginal Contemporary a go-to destination for both local and international art lovers.

For the past 15 years, Saturdays have always meant being in the gallery, which also meant missing many exhibition openings happening across Sydney. Since closing the physical space, I’ve finally had the chance to spend a weekend moving through exhibitions as a viewer rather than a host. It has been a powerful reminder of how art can fill your cup, restore a sense of joy, and create space for reflection, especially on the opening weekend of the Sydney Biennale!

Over the past 15 years working with Aboriginal art, one thing has become very clear to me: how an artwork is sourced matters just as much as the artwork itself.

I’ve spent time in remote community art centres, watched artists work, listened to stories being shared, and seen first-hand how art centres support people well beyond the studio, culturally, socially and economically. They are places of safety, pride and connection.

Ethical sourcing protects artists. It ensures they are paid fairly, that their work is shared with consent, and that cultural knowledge is respected. But it also matters deeply for buyers. Knowing where a work comes from, who it supports and how it was acquired creates a very different relationship with the artwork.

At Aboriginal Contemporary, every artwork we represent comes through long-standing relationships with Aboriginal-owned art centres. These relationships are built on trust, respect and time, not transactions.

For me and for many of my customers buying Aboriginal art is not just about filling a wall. It’s a cultural exchange, and with that comes responsibility.

If you’re considering acquiring Aboriginal art, whether personally or for an organisation, it’s worth taking the time to ask where the work comes from, who it supports and how it was sourced.

This year I’m working more closely with the corporate sector, helping them ethically source and engage their staff in Aboriginal art. I feel that investing in Aboriginal art in corporate spaces is about more than just putting beautiful paintings on office walls. It’s a strategic initiative that breathes life into corporate values, engages staff in indigenous culture, inspires a more creative workplace, shows a commitment to reconciliation and directly supports Aboriginal communities.

Kurlkurta Tjukurpa

This painting depicts Mary’s Country, at a sacred site known as the home of the Tingarri beings.

Mary was born bush way at Kurluwarri, west of this sacred site, but this place is Mary’s country, her home. It is where as a child she lived in the bush with her family, walking huge distances across the desert.

Mary’s in-depth knowledge of the sand hills, clay pans and rock holes of her country are represented with bold lines and detailed dot work in her traditional style paintings.

Mary steadily works her away across the canvas, repeating motifs that are part of a visual language unique to the Western Desert, to allow for a continuation of traditional forms and stories.
