Today’s announcement from the Labor Government has genuinely troubled me.
As a sports shooter and hunter, I have invested countless hours volunteering, travelling, training, and competing in the sport I love. I have spent thousands of dollars—money I worked hard for—on equipment, memberships, and competitions. Along the way, I’ve formed lifelong friendships with some of the most supportive, respectful, and genuine people I’ve ever known.
And for what? To be vilified and treated as though I pose a threat, based on nothing more than lawful firearm ownership.
No other sport in Australia lives under the constant fear of being legislated out of existence. More people are killed in car and motorcycle accidents every year, yet motorsport is not targeted. Violent assaults occur daily, yet combat sports (MMA etc) are not blamed. Only when fi****ms are involved are the actions of a few used to justify punishment of an entire community.
Why? Because it’s convenient.
Taking a hard stance on gun laws creates the appearance of decisive action, while conveniently diverting attention away from deeper, more complex issues that actually drive crime and violence. It’s political theatre at the expense of law-abiding Australians who already operate under some of the strictest regulations in the world.
This is not evidence-based policy. It is fear-driven legislation—and it represents yet another failure of the current Australian government to engage honestly with responsible citizens and sporting communities.
Something needs to change in this country. I spent over 20 years of my life fighting for Australia. Fighting for you as my fellow Australians. This isn't the way Australia is supposed to be.
If the current laws were followed by the government, the tragedy at Bondi Beach would never have happened. The laws were already in place, yet failures of ASIO, the AFP and NSWPOL allowed it to happen. Plus they are conveniently leaving out the fact these guys had IEDs as well. The government needs to take accountability.
RIP to the dead innocents and may the injured get well soon.
