Christmas lilies are being planted out this week! Dahlia tubers are resting up just behind them nearly ready for their turn. There’s nothing quite like the anticipation of a new growing season!

The "last row" struggle is real! Your back is tired with dealing with basketball sized clumps, your running out of bulb crates & your storage space has officially turned into a game of Tetris. The joys of dahlia growing! Unfortunately we never learn come spring & plant more than we can remember! 😅

Two months ago, this dam was bone dry and giving us nothing but mud if we even attempted to use our water pump. Fast forward to today, and we’re staring at a full dam thats about to overflow!

While the rest of the farm is tucking itself in for winter, our proteas are the only ones enjoying the cold! Planted just on 7 years ago on the farm, its so rewarding watching them mature and get fuller with flowers year after year.

We are officially at the halfway mark of lifting our dahlia tubers, but the view in the field looks wildly different than it did this time last year.
By late June last winter, everything was well and truly dormant.
Fast forward to today, and we still have stubborn green foliage pumping out "ordinary" little blooms and it’s not just the dahlias getting confused by this mild start to winter!

Our Alstroemeria, which was severely frost damaged by this time last year, is still producing absolutely perfect flowers.

While, our Lancelot Proteas which usually hold off until late winter are flushing already.

It’s a beautiful, slightly chaotic reminder of how drastically the weather dictates our daily operations.

A mild winter kickoff means the plants are getting mixed signals, keeping their energy up top instead of sending it all down into the tubers and root systems.

Every year rewrites the script, and adaptability & positivity is the name of the game. How this will affect spring and summer, we'll just have to see.

A little late to the game, but tuber lifting is officially underway! 🚜
It honestly feels a bit wild to be digging when we still have lush green foliage and active flowers. Without a heavy frost to knock them back, some of these varieties just want to keep on growing! 🌸✨

The major perk of the poly tunnels? Very little risk of rot over winter. That means we don't have to rush! We can carefully pick and choose to lift only the varieties that are truly ready for their winter nap.

We’re going to aim to plant a lot earlier than we have been to really stretch out and extend that gorgeous flower season! 🌸

Tubers are being lifted, ground is being turned, and we’re already planning for the next season.

Our Dahlias survive another week but very slow on flower production, warmer weather may improve this! Can see another week or so before they are done for the season. You can still find our dahlia bunches at all week!
