Shulbaan Al Badi
Oil on Linen
by Amber Martin - Artist
There are some horses that stop you in your tracks, and Shulbaan Al Badi was one of them. The moment I saw Trent Marshallās photograph, I was captivated by the stallionās elegance, presence, and unmistakable Arabian character.
His refined features, expressive eyes, and proud bearing embody the beauty that has made the Arabian horse one of the most admired breeds in the world.
Bred and owned by David Marshall of Holly Farm Stud in New Zealand, Shulbaan Al Badi is presented here wearing a magnificent traditional Arabian bridle, lovingly handcrafted by Davidās mother.
Rich with colour, tassels, and cultural significance, the bridle celebrates the long history and heritage of the Arabian horse while adding a sense of ceremony and pride to the portrait.
For me, this painting is also deeply personal. My fascination with horses began as a child, when I filled school workbooks with horse sketches instead of paying attention to what I was meant to be doing. Those early drawings started as simple stick figures, but as I grew older, so did my understanding of form, movement, and character.
Horses became both my greatest artistic challenge and my greatest inspiration.
Painted in oils on linen, this work reflects a lifelong journey of observing and learning from these remarkable animals. More than a portrait, it is a celebration of beauty, heritage, craftsmanship, and the enduring connection between horse and artist. Through Shulbaan Al Badi, I hope to convey not only the physical elegance of the Arabian horse, but also the sense of wonder that first inspired me to pick up a pencil as a child and which continues to inspire me today. šāØ
