The North East main line in Victoria conjures up memories of the mighty `S’ class Pacifics hauling the Spirit of Progress express passenger train on the broad gauge. There were also a number of branch lines that fed the main line, most of which are sadly closed. Lines such as that between Wodonga and Cudgewa, with its steep grades, tight curves and trestle bridges, or the Springhurst to Wahgunyah branch with it’s mixed train and not forgetting the picturesque Tallarook to Mansfield line. In this DVD we will go back to the late 1950s and early 1960s when steam, and later diesel electric locomotives, were in charge of the many goods trains that worked on these lines. The films, mainly shot by the late Keith Atkinson, and restored by Channel 5 Productions, show the lines in all their glory , but also signs of decline, where a few trucks constituted a train.
Highlights include:
• Riding the Tallangatta to Cudgewa goods as far as Beetoomba, returning by special train hauled by J 516 from Cudgewa.
• Films of the Wahgunyah mixed, hauled by D3 class locomotives.
• Extensive footage of a `J’class hauled goods from Mansfield to Tallarook, plus various diesel hauled goods trains and rail motors.
